The Falkland Islands government is considering a review of the response protocol to actions committed by visitors who ignore Islands' rules or are involved in misbehavior, harassing locals as happened this month, reports the Penguin News in this Friday's edition. The different branches of Falklands' government act coordinately and effectively, in such cases and admit it usually involves a minority of Argentine visitors. Read full article

Seems to me the Islanders need a new Attorney General, one who can see the wood from the trees (few as they are on the islands).

ANYONE committing a breach of the peace should suffer a penalty on a sliding scale according to the stated (in writing) seriousness of the offense, just like they would in England and Wales.

Those taking, or attempting to take, fired shell or cartridge casings have / are committing theft? Doing the same with live ammunition is a far more serious offence and carries a custodial sentence in the UK if attempting to board an aircraft.

Seems to me more level headed people are needed to stop this nonsense in it's tracks, not the muddle that presently seems to exist.

These people should be removed from planes, fined and made to wait and pay for the next flight out - then banned from returning. Other types of antisocial behaviour should be dealt with in a similar manner; make them appear before a magistrate the day after their flight out. Such things would soon stop.

It just shows what a decent law abiding people the Falklanders are. Draw the comparison with the Top Gear incident. Can you imagine what it would be like if Argentina were ever to gain control of the Falkland islands !

For every 1982 war souvenir item that a visitor wants to remove, they should be given a day in the landmine clearance programme to see the real effects of war.

Generally incompetence in government is associated with Argentina. Whilst this attorney general cannot use existing law to punish people who by shouting unprovoked at old ladies have committed assault without battery, it shows that as he is part of the establishment, the FIG is now displaying signs of incompetence itself.
No one in the UK would be allowed to board an aircraft after carrying ammo, and why can FIG not issue an exclusion order or asbo to stop offenders returning.

The FIG should sort this out or become as much a laughing stock as the Argentines are.

    True.

they have NO RIGHTS to come to the islands and abuse people.

The mere intent of an argento to visit the islands should be viewed as prima facie evidence of criminal behaviour.

7 Briton- Actually Argentines do have lots of RIGHTS here - according to our Attorney General.
They have the right to put up and wave their national flags about wherever they like and in front of us .
They have the right under EU Freedom of Speech to shout “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” into our faces and even elderly ladies out for an innocent Sunday stroll.
They seem to have the right to write inflammatory comments and deface the pages of a British War Cemetery Visitors Book.

Under our current Att. General we Islanders appear to have NO RIGHTS of protection against:
    Racial Verbal Abuse
    Personal Harrassment
    Verbal Insults
Actions likely to cause us personal or mental stress.

Allright for the Att,G - he can fly away at the end of his contract with the gratuity, clean sheet nothing done controversial in his time, box ticked for onwards promotion elsewhere.

They appear to have the right to deliberately disguise 40 rifle shells(even fired ones can still have some explosive materiel in them) inside metal foil to try to avoid scanning detection and board an international flight aircraft with them- and merely have the rounds taken off them and a mild “tut-tut” - not even a talking to by the Police!

They have the right to attempt to do this TWICE - the recent folks were same group who were involved in a similar episode a year or so ago- then the rifle rounds were shoved up inside camera tripod metal legs as disguise.

They have the right to attempt to carry a large sharp hunting knife onto same flight in hand luggage - and then be very vague as to how it got there when intercepted - but again - the right to just be waved on through minus knife and no questions.

I hope these incidents will be borne in mind by the authorities in the Falkland Islands when arrogant Alejandro Gabriel Scomparin makes his planned provocative visit to the archipelago - I refer to the bearer of the rosaries whose intentions were published on these pages several weeks ago.

In my opinion he should be banned for the islands.

Why do argies have European rights, they aint European.

perhaps the Attorney General. is brainwashed.

Presumably the details of anyone stupid enough to try to take potentially explosive materials and/or offensive weapons in hand luggage on a pressurised airliner would be passed to the operator of that airliner?

I'd imagine the batshit numpty quota arriving at MPA would be distinctly reduced if LAN were to blacklist them from all of their flights.

Just to remind the police in the Falkland Islands, S4A Public Order Act, intentionally causing harassment alarm and distress.

    6 months imprisonment

It's a courts decision as to guilt and punishment, not the police or the CPS . It sounds to me like they are making it up as they go along.

    Simple,
    Ban ALL Argentines.
    Repatriate the RG graves.
So sorry for the genuine RG tourists but you'd get ALL the RG troublemakers.

The reason you cant take picked up cases on a flight is theres no garuntee they are completely inert there were still live rounds knocking about in 92 on the battlefields anything found might be inert or might be unstable simply not worth the risk.

Perhaps  the post of chief Legal adviser, is not accountable to the FIG, but directly to those in charge of the establishment ?

If the bodies were repatriated there would not be a problem now,

then again, an agreement with Russia to house argie prisoners in Siberia might help,

    just saying like.

You can't really put people in jail just for waving a flag. And making them miss the flight just means they'd be stuck on the islands for a month, probably claiming to have no money so YOU'D be paying for them.

Doesn't the FIG have the power to ban troublemakers like the ones trying to smuggle shells?

    @ 9

No they do NOT have those rights under any EU or British law. There are limitations on Freedom of speech even in UK. Race, Hate ect ect

Waving a national flag at a sporting event or celebration is one thing and no problem. Waving a national flag in somone elses face in a deliberate attempt to provoke them is “action likely to provoke a breach of the peace” as indeed are the other actions you mention. Attempting to SMUGGLE ammunition or a hunting knife on board an aircraft - For Pete's Sake !!!!

What precisely is it your Police do (shiny new Land/Range Rover I note) do they not have the power of arrest ?

Why do you need an English Attorney General ?

Has FIG the power to make its own laws or not ?

@ 2 Frost has the answer - If there are no flights back, perhaps one of those awfully nice Chillean Trawlers could be paid to drop them off on the way home - do hope the seas not too rough though, hate for the RG to get seasick.

Don't imprison these offenders...just give them a life time ban from the Falkland Islands, and those that try to smuggle weapons or ammunition on an aircraft, should be put on the international no fly list as potential terrorists.

    That'll learn them.

Maybe you could get some of those nice Argie army officers from 1982 to come out of prison or retirement or whatever, and show the islanders how to stake misbehaving argies to the frozen ground. After all, it seems to be “La Manera Argentina.”

What you should do, if some tourist starts shouting slogans, is pretend to be super religious. Ask them if they have accepted Jesus into their hearts. Tell them god loves them and will forgive them for what they are doing. Be ever so earnest and stare into their eyes the whole time. Finally give them a big hug and stick something funny to their back.

Also have a friend film it and put it on youtube so we can all have a good laugh. :)

Do you know how many minutes a bunch of English youths waving an English flag about in Glasgow would last....?

21 McGregor- yes we can and do make our own laws- but the have to be compliant with EU Human Rights Laws etc as through UK we are an associated memberstate of the EU.
That is the problem - and we have a very wet Att General at the moment, who is probably more interested in keeping his nose and slate clean for the box tick and promotion onto next job rather than doing the best job for the people whose taxes currently pay his wages. And as a democracy he and the Legislature are separate.

Your not in Glasgow.... & proud of my name.

The type of behaviour in the article would provoke trouble in Vatican City. I wouldn't condone violent reprisal but on the other hand wouldn't shed too many tears either. Interesting that you chose “English youths” in your example rather than say Argentinian and avoided the label “louts”.

Incidentally did you read the Governors State of the Nation & the reference to the “new prison extension” - I did say they were resourceful.

Of course I'm not in Glasgow...but unlike you I am in Scotland...Argyll to be precise.
I am in Glasgow most weeks though...
Being in Argyll I know plenty of MacGregors, can't say I know any McGregors....
Don't pretend you know Glasgow and don't pretend you know Scotland...proud of your name huh...you sound like a wannabe...a Scot wouldn't make an issue over his name...it goes with the turf....
Yeah Argyll the origin of Clan MacGregor....
...and of course I chose English youths...we are hardly likely to be seeing Argentinian youths hanging about Glasgow...
    Where are you...Canada, Australia....?
I can spot a window licker that's for sure....

As for the last 3 years or so it still spews out its 25 year tripe.
Also, if you notice, its in the wee hours.
The ridiculous, lying, hate-filled long texts that he/she/it ear-bashes us with could be the efforts of several people.
    Whatever, its a moron.
