The United Kingdom has returned to the Falkland Islands one of the two Boeing Chinook heavy-lift helicopters that were withdrawn in 2006 for operational service in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) told IHS Jane's on 4 July.
Prior to 2006 the United Kingdom had a pair of Chinooks permanently detached to the South Atlantic islands. With combat operations in Afghanistan having concluded in December 2014, the Secretary of State for Defense, Michael Fallon, announced in March 2015 that the Chinook force would return to this baseline strength.
According to the MoD, the first helicopter arrived back in the Falkland Islands in June after having been transported by ship, and is now flying.

Jul 11th, 2016 - 10:05 am 0The Chinook can probably use any part of the Falklands as a base. Pity we lost so many when the Atlantic Conveyor went down. Excellent troop transport, equipment transport and, with a bit of modification, gunship. Check out the number of windows. Take out the plexiglass and install miniguns.
