Remembering a painful past, Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet said on Sunday the truth must be told and justice be served for thousands of victims of the country’s dictatorship. She made the statement as Chileans marked the 43 anniversary of the coup which ousted democratically-elected President Salvador Allende and began the 17-year-long dictatorship of General Pinochet on September 11, 1973. Yes, he was an unrepentant Marxist.
”In August 1973, a constitutional crisis occurred, and the Supreme Court of Chile publicly complained about the inability of Allende government to enforce the law of the land. On 22 August, the Chamber of Deputies (with the Christian Democrats uniting with the National Party) accused the government of unconstitutional acts through Allende's refusal to promulgate constitutional amendments, already approved by the Chamber, which would have prevented his government from continuing his massive nationalization plan[92] and called upon the military to enforce constitutional order.[93]”

In his doctoral thesis 'Higiene Mental y Delincuencia' he proposes euthanizing sufferers of some mental illness and psychiatric treatment for homosexuals. He also favoured sterilisation for gypsies and he was an anti-semite:
Los hebreos se caracterizan por determinadas formas de delito: estafa, falsedad, calumnia, y sobre todo, usura.
He also refused to extradite nazi Walter Rauff, responsible for gassing 10s of thousands, to Germany for trial.
Just because he was killed by someone nasty doesn't mean he was nice.

My feelings for Allende are mostly negative but I recognise some of his achievements and the value of some of his ideals within the context of the era.
The years around his death mark an inflection point in the development of Chile, a process that continues.
I am sure that Allende would be happy to see that Chile today has the greatest life expectancy, the highest earnings, the best schools and lowest corruption in South America.
Allende and the coup were the dark hours before dawn.
tiki tiki tiiiiiii!!!
¡Viva Chile!
