Iran's monetary unit, the rial, reached a new low against the U.S. dollar on Monday in what was perceived as a sign of doubt about the country's future following the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20. Presidential elections in Iran next year also played a part. Read full article

Any action that destabilises the hold of the bat-shit mad Ayatollahs have on the 'normal' people is fine by me.

The alternative is that if Iran keep going as they are the whole of the area will be turned into a lump of glass.

Hmmm. We thought it would be a good idea to get rid of Saddam too. Ditto Gaddafi. Those didn't turn out so well; what makes you think destabilising Iran would go any better?

    @ DT

I know a number of Iranians who came to the UK to escape this damnable regime, they are desperate to be able to rejoin their homeland and financially support the main underground which is hoping to overturn the bat-shit mad ragheads.

Once that happens and the various 'religious armed police' are dealt with (harshly it seems) they are convinced they can bring the country up to western standards given a few years.

Nothing peaceful will get rid of the nutters, they are way beyond that.

Given they keep trying to get modern nuclear weapons their intentions are not peaceful. THEY will force the hand of other countries to prevent a disaster of epic proportions happening.

What a ridiculously naive post from the bat-shit mad ChrisR. I guess it is oh, so simple to solve the Middle-East problems when you believe everything you read in the Daily Mail and worship Trump.

What do Iranians who grew up under the religious regime and still live there think about it? They are the ones who have to decide they want a different government and work out how to achieve that. And given Britain and the US's previous disastrous track record of meddling with Iran, I think the best thing we can do is stay out of it.

And I'm curious to know if you think Britain's intentions in renewing our nuclear missile submarines are peaceful or not?

I don't trust Iran's motives and I think it would be a very bad thing if they manage to develop nuclear weapons, but they may reasonably believe they'd be safer with them, given what happened to their neighbour Iraq.

It is a shame, because Iran was reasonably developed and far saner than Saudi Arabia originally. They probably could have reached western standards by now with a different government.

Be fair now, it's the Brexpress he believes everything he reads in.

I spent a few months in Iran in 1972 - the Shah frequently boasted about the coming “great civilisation” and that within a few years Iran would be the 4th or 5th largest economy in the world, on a par with W.Germany. I recall it was about 30 Rials to the USD at the time. I still have a crisp new banknote from that time..! (I collect one or two from every country I visit but I began my collection there..!)
