The Royal Falkland Islands Police are continuing to investigate reported damage within the Argentine Cemetery near Darwin which was discovered during the last week of January. The damage refers to the vandalized case containing a statue of the Virgin of Lujan, and the image, overlooking the lines of crosses at the cemetery. Read full article

Disclaimer & comment rulesYeah, it's a terrible shame. Still, if the argies had taken their corpses with them instead of leaving them as a 'claim', it wouldn't happen.
Feb 03rd, 2017 - 09:44 am - Link - Report abuse +3Perhaps, every time that “Argentina reaffirms, once again, its legitimate rights over the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich islands and surrounding maritime spaces, which are integral part of national territory” someone decides to show argieland what they think of 'national territory'.
The photograph of the statue in the case looks like that from 2012. From what little information is available, there was no suggestion of damage to the glass on this occasion.

Most communities would have apologised and repaired the damage themselves regardless of who was responsible, at their own expense, has it been repaired...?
I was sooo.. tempted to write irregardless...
I Think, Think knows who it was,

Feb 03rd, 2017 - 02:16 pm - Link - Report abuse +4Are YOU really in full possession of your senses? Just why should the Falklands LEGITIMATE community take it upon themselves to repair this damage? It may just be possible that the damage has been caused by a visitor from Argentina.
Voice is an indignant little Argentine, himself.
Feb 03rd, 2017 - 03:46 pm - Link - Report abuse +1Mr. Think/voice - no such word as irregardless - you're slipping.
This must have made you upset. Are you a Malvinas Veteran?
@gordo1
Feb 03rd, 2017 - 04:58 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Why wouldn't they offer to pay for the damage? It wouldn't break the bank and it would be a nice gesture. If you believe the damage was done by someone from Argentina in order to create bad publicity, then frustrating them by creating good publicity would only be a good thing.
How about a trade - send over 40 Argies to sort out the rest of the landmines they laid and the Islanders will fix up the cemetery? Careful Gordo you'll get Voicey's Hackles up.
Feb 03rd, 2017 - 05:05 pm - Link - Report abuse +1It's what Communities do...if it was a German or Italian cemetery in the UK the local Community Council would have repaired it without a question...

Feb 03rd, 2017 - 06:48 pm - Link - Report abuse +1And I suppose you believe the events of 1982 were nice gestures on the part of Argentina which has never offered to pay for the removal of the mines they seeded at the time of the invasion - amongst other gestures committed by that benighted nation.
Maj Roger Latchford had a terrible time with the Argies. Totally uncooperative at the time of burials. We are still de-mining the areas the Argies illegally mined and they havent paid a Peso in compensation. THEY should apologise for their behaviour, stop the histrionics and grow up. THEY wanted this cemetery its their responsibility to maintain it, which they don't. They just whinge at every opportunity.

I've mentioned it before, it was a lazy habit I developed on a mobile phone, I couldn't be bothered doing a character shift to put in a comma, but the full stop didn't require a shift so I used multiple ones....for a pause...

By the way... Have you noticed that Captain Poppy has also begun using them ellipses too...?
I think if this were just dealt with quietly it would not be manipulated by the Argentine press and maybe the Argentine visitors would stop causing damage in order to perpetuate their false victim status.

Does she mean as “quietly” as the 2012 vandalism case against the same Virgin...?
However, the Argentine vandalism of 1982 goes unmentioned by you?
I Think it should get recognition because without that crass, foolish, idiotic and illegal Argentine invasion, there wouldn't have been the vandalism noted in the MercoPress article.
Well to be fair ElaineB does have a point,
Feb 05th, 2017 - 12:26 am - Link - Report abuse +1no person should ever show disrespect to the dead and damage their remains.
Roger, there was no suggestion of damage to the glass on this occasion must have been an inside job Guv. said the investigating officer,
Feb 05th, 2017 - 10:44 am - Link - Report abuse +1Your badly informed sources haven't thought the problems through Think, such a) (un-nickable) power supply and b) the camera being the first to get damaged should itinerant argies be looking to cause trouble.
Feb 06th, 2017 - 06:33 am - Link - Report abuse +2And I can't see Argentina paying for it. They don't do much for this half forgotten cemetery as it is. Crumbling away it seems. Even the caretaker doesn't go visit for 2 months. If the Falklands did tumbleweed, that cemetery is where it would head for.
I have wondered whether the doll was attempting to break out golfcronie - the boredom must be terrible in that forsaken spot.
Over the years the cemetery will be less visited so in time it will be windblown and as you say crumble into dust.

As I previously suggsed to the FIG (leaf)...:
- An easy (and cheapo) way to avoid any of these quite embarrassing episodes would be to install a 24 hs. Solar 4G-3G Wi-Fi Ultra High Definition Remote Web Cam on top of a sturdy, ~65 feet tall steel pole... Add some NATO barbed wired rolls at the base and not even the best of Bennies in them windblown Islands would be able to nick nothin'...
If..., by any chance..., somebody..., somehow succeeded in nicking it... we would have them on the Cloud... wouldn't we...?

By the way... just professional curiosity...
In your time as an Engrish copper in England...
Who would you have rounded up if your local Jewish Cemetery had been desacrated?
The usual suspects... or the Rabbi, the local Jewish community and some Israelian tourists...?
Thynk, if we cared we could solve it, if we cared we could put in surveillance… but we don't. Whose fault is that? - yours, and turnips like you and your puppet, tiresome turnips, troublemakers, liars, thieves, assorted quislings and nabos. A transformation in attitude and abandoning the false claim would be a good start.
Feb 06th, 2017 - 04:42 pm - Link - Report abuse +1Who is WE...?
Feb 06th, 2017 - 06:19 pm - Link - Report abuse +1Are you implying that you have a say...Englishman...?
...says the non-Brit, non-Scot, disembodied Argentine.
Feb 06th, 2017 - 09:01 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The Argentine government should buy a pole and stick a camera on it. After all it is their cemetery , Ah thats no good that would expose the Argies that stoned the effigy.
Feb 06th, 2017 - 10:37 pm - Link - Report abuse 0England will return the Malvinas within 25 years.
Feb 07th, 2017 - 01:16 am - Link - Report abuse 0Think - minor damage at cemeteries (regardless of religion) Was/is so common it used to be noted in the Occurrence Book and nobody would have been 'rounded up' at all.
Feb 07th, 2017 - 06:57 am - Link - Report abuse +1And there is no nation like Argieland, with its creed of viveza criolla. Surely an Argie would shoot himself in the foot just to be able to blame another. My money is still on an Argie.
Wonderful ideas as to how to protect a camera Think. Two questions a) wouldn't it be easier to surround Argentina's doll with razor wire, and b) who is paying?
The last question is relevant Think as Argieland does not contribute to the upkeep of the cemetery which, according to the agreements falls to the relatives. Seems the Argie caretaker only pops along 3 or 4 times every year. About time these bodies were shipped back to where they belong. Stop them being used for childish propaganda if nothing else.
Someone above raised the issue of compensation/reparations for the 1982 war. Forget it - a certain Mr. Blair gave that one up ....... for free.
Sloppy police work..., Mr. Lorton...
Feb 07th, 2017 - 03:49 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Happens to be that this minor cemetery damage is so uncommon it has been reported in all national papers of Britain and Argentina..., in many international ones..., has been officially condemned and regretted by both our Governments and it is currently on a Crown Minister's desk.....

Actually Think, reports have been relatively muted (Oxford mail?) and the matter has already been forgotten by the press it seems. If it wasn't for the political sensitivities with negotiations taking place, it wouldn't have received two paragraphs in the local newspaper.
Feb 07th, 2017 - 11:37 pm - Link - Report abuse +1I hear that the relevant times window has now added October & November to the original December & January.
