    Expensive lobbying...

    Though..., a million times more effective that sending them usual MLA suspects (and their young female “Sherpas”) on paid vacations to the Caribbean to attend some third rate “conferences” or whatever...

    Think

    Have you ever looked in the mirror and seen the “twerp” that lurks there?

    Third rate conferences Think? What are we talking about? CELAC? MERCOSUR? The OAS? There are so many 3rd raters in that part of the world.

    As for 'lobbying' - who is going to who?

    Assuming the weather improves.

    Keep thinking Think - you'll get there one day :-)

    Or the C24? They always seem to pick the nice, sunny islands to hold their conferences.

    Think,
    Pretty sure all costs and expenses in these MPs coming to the Islands are fully paid for by Falkland Islands Govt. Those of our MLAs and others going overseas on govt business are also fully covered by us local taxpayers as well.

    “Four members of the UK Parliament are visiting the Islands Guests of the Falkland Islands Government;”

    Did the Argentine embassy in London issue them with their visas or are they calling into BA on the way to receive authorization to enter the Falklands?

    Oh, that's right, in spite of what Argentines think, the Falkland's don't belong to Argentina.

    “Members of Parliament are regularly invited to the Falkland Islands by FIG”

    So what are the FIG supposedly “lobbying” for Think?

    Or are they just keeping MPs informed of their situation - as they have done for decades. Another Fact Finding Trip which MPs see as one of the perks of the job - not a conspiracy. As for who is paying ..... the taxpayers of course. Which ones is open to speculation ( cue Voice)

    So, fly from an RAF base for 18 hours on a dry flight (and the take-off was delayed 24 hours). Bumpy hour's drive into Stanley. Next day, bumpy flight in a small plane to a remote island. See penguins. Next day, small plane back to Stanley. See local worthies. Next day, 18 hours flight back to an RAF base.
    Hardly a “jolly”!

    Funny thing about brit politics is that the islanders believe that they can “declare independence” whenever they want, and that its not just a bluff from the true brits up the north.

    An islander independence declaration would last about a minute, the minute necessary to get arrested by some royal navy marine, with the resulting kicking into jail to all responsible.

    @LukeDig
    Don't be daft, the army wouldn't need to arrest anyone, just threaten to leave. The chance of having Rosana Bertone as governor is enough to keep anyone in line.

    And shouldn't Four members of the UK Parliament visit the British Falkland's,

    im sure Argentinian politicians would visit them if they ever got control.

    Then again ? maybe not.

    @Lukedig

    “necessary to get arrested by some royal navy marine,”

    The Royal Marines no longer have a permanent presence. You are stuck in the 1970s amigo.

    Still better than having your clock stopped at 1833.

    If the Islands declared independence and asked for UK protection,that would be no different from the Afghans and Iraqis asking for Brit protection. Also the UK helped Belize out after independence.

    According to the C24's remit, all NSGTs are encouraged to become independent.

    This is also mentioned in your favourite piece of paper, 2065.

    If the Islanders asked for independence, the UK would allow it. After all, they allowed Belize independence and protected them from Guatemala.

    The Islanders would not however declare independence unless they were earning enough money to pay the UK to defend them.

    .So instead of Royal Marines as great as they are, perhaps after Independence, like Argentina did, they could employ mercenaries. Perhaps the Ghurkas might be interested?

    You would find the UK would not retain sovereignty if the Islands became independent.

    They would instead supply the Islands with services, workers and supplies and make money out of the Islands, in addition to defending them if necessary.

    At the moment they would last more than a minute because you have very little to invade the islands with, except target practice for the FIDF.
