Spain’s Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis called on Tuesday for calm in the row over Gibraltar’s inclusion in the EU guidelines, adding that he was surprised by the reactions in Britain. He was speaking amid a media frenzy after the EU said in its guidelines that Spain must agree before any future trade deal between the UK and the EU can be extended to Gibraltar. Read full article

I was surprised too. The Brexiters promised that leaving the EU would not make wars more likely, why are they sabre-rattling before we have even left?

“The Spanish government is a little surprised by the tone of comments coming out of Britain, a country known for its composure,” Dastis said.

He also said, I am for “Gibraltar, Spanish”, but you have to be smart. (8 feb, 2017 copeaxarquia.es).

    Not that smart then.

Luckily for the UK..., there are still people like PAUL MASON..., that can clearly see the British Rightwing Imperiat fantasies through that thick Engrish Jingoistic fog...:

《“Empire 2.0”has deep roots not just in the thinking of the Tory right, but in that of a xenophobic minority in England whose consciousness is moulded by the Daily Mail, nostalgia dramas on TV and an almost continuous stream of military pageants on this or that anniversary of this or that war.
For them, the UK’s connections with Europe were always the source of cognitive dissonance. Britain’s essential destiny was to “rule the waves”, not just through sea power, but through the cultural hegemony of its pop icons and its fashion designers.
That was always the subtextual meaning of the small wars the UK kept fighting: over the Falklands, with Iceland over fishing rights. It was the subtext, too, for the weirdly distributed bases of the British army: jungle training in Belize; the Gurkhas, stationed not just in Nepal but in Brunei; the two sovereign territories on Cyprus; and, of course, Gibraltar itself.》

Classy journalism according to El Think...,( another radical social democrat who favours the creation of a peer-to-peer sector (co-ops, open source etc) alongside the market and the state, as part of a long transition to a post-capitalist economy.... ;-)

Of course you would raise the diversion of fantasies since the issue is entirely predicated on international law and the UK has no other choice other than to comply with its demands. Especially since you’ve given yourself mental haemorrhoids failing to overcome that singularity.

Heard a very interesting take on this today, that suggested the EU comments regarding Gib, may actually be helpful to the UK and the rest of the EU as it stops Spain from vetoing the entire deal based on Gib alone.

Basically they were saying to Spain, don't think about using Gib to hold up the entire process (like Wallonia did with Canada).

An interesting take, which could make some sense.

Because some faded out of date ultra right wing UK politician says something completely daft the media and UK naysayers join the fray trying to pin the nonsense on ALL Brits. Listen to what Theresa is saying, that is the UKs policy.

Little shitstirring twat Tinkle emerges from his sinkhole in Brook Street with his loathsome script prepared by his small army of propagandists. Utterly predictable nonsense. I expect his parrot will be along in a minute with even more tripe.

As for the shitstirrer claiming to be a radical paragon of good governance one only has to Think back for a moment to his various racist and intolerant Nazi utterances on Mercopress to realise that that is utter nonsense too.

I don't think I believe in this 'Empire 2.0'. That some people in Britain would like to imagine it yes, but that our politicians would seriously entertain it, no. They may as well appeal to the Commonwealth since they are desperate, but I don't believe 'small wars' like the Falklands and the Cod Wars (are there any others?) have any deeper meaning. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Nothing surpasses the primacy of international law that no country can transcend. So the UK doesn’t have to do anything as the issue is well beyond the remit of European politics.

Shitstirrer, we all know exactly who he is. A consistent mistake of RG turnips like yourself has been to consistently underestimate the British. The last time your cruiser got sunk, your air force was shot to pieces and your troops ran away before making a humiliating surrender.

You all wish you had never heard of the British. It's a wonder you keep coming back for more?

Both the EU and Spain have drawn the short straw on this issue, while the UK sticks with the tried and true.

Spanish veto over Gibraltar in the European council’s draft negotiating guidelines is illegal under binding supreme international law. Namely, the Charter of the United Nations,
Chapter I, Article 1 Article 2, and Article 73. Also a violation of the following UN resolutions Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples Adopted by General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV), and United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2131(XX). Declaration on the Inadmissibility of Intervention in the Domestic Affairs of States and the Protection of Their Independence and Sovereignty

    “UN Charter Article 103
In the event of a conflict between the obligations of the Members of the United Nations under the present Charter and their obligations under any other international agreement, their obligations under the present Charter shall prevail. “

That may well be, but back at the ranch house. Both the EU and Spain have drawn the short straw on this issue, while the UK sticks with the tried and true. So the long shadow of the supreme UN Charter will put an end to their illegal activities.
