The question is why is this piece appearing in Mercopenguin, a propaganda organ supposedly devoted to America, South America and the “South Atlantic”?

Ignoring the troll, what to people think about May's plans? My impression is that most of our elected representatives don't know what they are talking about when it comes to the internet. Facebook etc could do more to police themselves and seem to be starting to do so, but you can't ban encryption, and the terrorists can always find new ways to communicate. These tools are mostly used by ordinary people, and no one would suggest banning motor vehicles because the terrorists have made use of them.

For example, I don't want my bank using less secure encryption because the government wants to spy on terrorists' transactions, or to have my chats accessible to any old hacker because the government has insisted WhatsApp put a backdoor in their software.

    @ DT

I think part of the plan is to make FB et al more accountable for the traffic they carry (and make money out of). I agree with your assertion that bad people will find a way but why make it easy for them. The problem is people are being radicalised by social media and that surely needs to be curtailed.

Personally, I have no problem with social media being monitored. If you want to communicate privately there are other ways.

Be like me, I never use facebook or any other online waste of time....except this forum.

My mobile phone lives in the car for emergency use and it is ONLY a phone...no internet connection. When I am out, I see hordes of mindless zombies walking along staring at a small screen and poking it with their fingers.
Women especially seem to be so addicted to their phones that they carry them in their left hands and look at them every 30 seconds.

Watch them in supermarket car parks. The first thing they do is look at their phone and spend about 5 minutes before moving off. I feel like shouting ..get a life ! Look at real life not a virtual world.

I have seen it also in cafes. Groups of women sitting together and each one engrossed in their ipad rather then talk to each other.

    Grumpy old man speaking !
