Feb 06th, 2018 - 02:24 pm - Link - Report abuse -1There's an easy way to solve that.
And where has the story about the Spanish Trawler arrested for fishing in Argentina gone?
”(Argentina's foreign minister Jorge) Faurie revealed that Tillerson had also expressed concern about the growing political and trade influence of Russia and China...”
Feb 06th, 2018 - 05:58 pm - Link - Report abuse -2Nothing new about U.S. officials feeling they have a right to openly tell Latin American countries which countries they can have business with.
What is new is to have an Argentine government willing to listen to the B.S. with a candid smile.

Feb 06th, 2018 - 07:20 pm - Link - Report abuse -1That's the proper way to do it. Listen and smile and then go on trading with them. This seems to be exactly what Macri is doing, judging by other recent articles on here.

Feb 08th, 2018 - 03:00 am - Link - Report abuse 0You are right. The horses have already left the barn, and it probably is too late for the U.S. to stop the growing relations between Latin America and competitor countries.
The Macri government's warming up to Russia and China, however, it's a new thing after his political front Cambiemos strongly criticized the former CFK government for doing the same.
For a government that has pledged a return to the world at a time where countries are closing up to trade, this looks pretty much like a forced pragmatism, illustrated by the failure to obtain any tangible results in recent trips to the U.S. and Europe.
Pragmatism is good. If the US is closing itself to trade then turning to Russia and China is only sensible, even if Cambiemos doesn't favour them ideologically. Besides, they are still moving forward on the trade deal with the EU and I expect they will come to an agreement eventually; both sides want it too much to let this opportunity go.
Feb 08th, 2018 - 04:59 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I'm sure the hypocrisy is annoying, but you've got to look at what they are actually doing, and if it's the same as CFK then you must think that's a good thing, right?
Reekio,

There is a difference between trading (good) and selling off the family silver (unwise).
Really there's no reason why Argentina cannot maintain good relationships with the two most important economies in the world. Chile has done it very successfully for many years. The problem was CFK was a b*tch to the USA...
Feb 09th, 2018 - 01:04 am - Link - Report abuse +2I really can't bring myself to hate Tillerson, when the comparison is to Trump - and now standing next to Macri, the same feeling ;)

In what way? By being the only world leader to meet Snowden, by supporting Chavez and the Pink Tide, by refusing to implement IMF austerity, by refusing (along with Obama btw) to join the drive for war with Iran? If only we'd had a bitch here too, instead of Thtacher and May ;)
