Former Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, better or simply known as Lula, said Donald Trump “doesn't care about Latin America in the least and added that ”Bush and Condoleezza Rice pursued a much more democratic policy towards Brazil than Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.” In his view, Obama could give magnificent speeches, but never actually delivered. In YHO, I thought it was thoughtful and reflective. There’s nothing in what he claims that leaps out as anything but truthful.

“with the idea that most of the money would be spent on education, science and healthcare.”

And not spent on padding your own wallet and that of your political allies. Sure, plenty of truth in that.

“Before, Brazil was looking at the US and the EU with its back towards South American countries and Africa,“ Lula said.

Nothing more truthful. Same for Argentina, and same for most Latin American countries. Which is the source of most shortcomings in the sub-continent.

”'I decided to change that,' Lula said, noting that Brazilian elites have never come to terms with his choice.” No s...t! Our unpatriotic Latin American elites live and breath for the central countries and are full of contempt for their own people. Of course the Brazilian traditional owners were never to forgive Lula for acting differently.

And what our distinguished MP commentators say?

    Terence is sensibly right.

Cronie does not understand a thing but resorts to the cheap insult--that's the most his intellect can generate.

BP parrots the inanities created to try and diminish the achievements of Lula's government--achievements that Brazilians acknowledge by making him the front runner in the October presidential election and by flatly rejecting any candidacy of current president Michel Temer.

We need more Lulas--72 and still on the fight!

EM once a commie always a commie. When and if democracy comes to Latam then I think you will find that the likes of the West would treat you better. Of course there is corruption in all countries but SA are champions at it and the populace do not care they keep bringing the same old dirty washing out.

Is he right though? One might think a powerful and prosperous China is even more against US interests, yet China has grown rich mostly by exporting to the US and Europe.

I wonder how well his plan worked though. Today 18% of Brazil's exports go to South America, and only 4% to Africa, but I can't find comparable figures from before Lula took over. The biggest increase seems to have been in trade with China, which might have more to do with China's policies than Brazil's. It probably would have helped if the other Mercosur members were really committed to increasing regional trade, rather than protecting their own industries from Brazilian imports.

“...if democracy comes to Latam...the West would treat you better.”

You are a bit confused, Cronie. We are not begging to be “treated better.” We want to be left alone to decide our own future. If not for consisten U.S. intervention, be it sneaky or in the open, our deeply reactionary oligarchies would be history and we would have found our way to democracy and prosperity.

“EM once a commie always a commie.”

Congratulations for your excellent way of debating different opinions. No doubt, you still believe, like senator McCarthy, that accusing somebody of being a Communist is the ultimate weapon against someone who thinks differently.

I am not offended if you call me a commie though. However, when you, as a keyboard brave call the former president of a 200-million-people country an “arrogant and ignorant pig,” all you achieve is to expose your own intellectual level--not very flattering, mate.

    @EM
“We want to be left alone to decide our own future.”

Presumably you still want to trade with the US, though? Am I correct that the US embargo on Cuba only stops US companies trading with them, and third countries like Canada are free to do as they like?
