Nations meeting at the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London have adopted an initial strategy on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from ships, setting out a vision to reduce GHG emissions from international shipping and phase them out, as soon as possible in this century.     Ferries operating from the UK have had to switch to light cleaner fuel oils by law. However that doesnt stop other ships spewing out toxic smoke from the continued use of heavy fuel oils which have to be steam heated and passed through centifuges to make them suitable to power large marine diesels. Steaming up and down the channel you can spot the orange around the horizon on calm days. This needs worldwide action. Such ships are also the source of much Oceanic plastic waste which is thrown overboard willy nilly.
