Catalan MPs elect fervent separatist who pledges to reinstate Puigdemont as “the legitimate president”
Catalan MPs have elected a fervent separatist as the new chief of the region, ending a leadership vacuum of more than six months and setting the scene for more confrontations with the Spanish government. Quim Torra, 55, a former corporate lawyer who went on to lead a prominent pro-secession group, vowed to build an independent Catalan republic by working under the leadership of his fugitive predecessor, Carles Puigdemont. May 16th, 2018 - 05:47 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Simply put, it is easy enough to confirm that Catalonia was forced into Spain around 1500 years ago. And that wasn't all. At the end of a war between France and Spain, France took part of the Catalonia that existed then and Spain took the rest. The 1500 years catalogues a continuously running attempt at cultural genocide. What happened to the self-determination of peoples?
There's another factor. Much was made, last year, of the relatively small number of people that voted in the referendum. What was never mentioned was that, during the economically disastrous Franco regime, tens of thousands of people from other parts of Spain moved to Catalonia. It was, and remains, the wealthiest part of Spain. And so well over 50% of the inhabitants of Catalonia aren't Catalans. So the non-Catalans didn't turn out to vote. A simple case of greed.
And does it make you wonder about the size of the kickback that the Partido Popular slipped the European Commission to see things their way?
