But where on previous occasions Spain has used unequivocal language to describe Gibraltar as an “anachronism” that breaks up Spanish territorial integrity, this year Mr. Sanchez avoided any explicit reference to sovereignty -
Rajoy - “This is the only such territory in Europe, and one that affects our own territorial integrity,” Mr Rajoy said, claiming that Britain had “ignored the mandate” of the UN General Assembly. (Daily Telegraph 26 Sept 2013).
The Spanish believe that territorial integrity argument prevents Gibraltar from claiming self-determination.
