The far-right former military man Jair Bolsonaro won nearly half the votes in Brazil’s presidential election on Sunday, raising the strong prospect that he could take the helm of Latin America’s largest nation in a runoff later this month. Read full article

Disclaimer & comment rulesOf course, it will never be known whether actual democracy would have produced the present flattering results for far right sympathizers, that is, if Dilma Rousseff had not been taken down by legislative coup and favourite candidate Lula da Silva hadn't been taken out of the equation by a group of partisan judges on a mission. Beyond individuals, Brazilian democracy was dealt a series of death blows by an establishment focused on ensuring continuity of privilege for a few to the detriment of the many.
Oct 08th, 2018 - 03:28 pm - Link - Report abuse -2And so it seems Brazil, like Philippines and the U.S. did, is now poised to take a trip back to the Dark Ages and hit rock bottom before it's ready again to forge its way forward again.
In the meantime, the poor, the women, the blacks, the gender diverse, the social activists and even the middle classes will see any recent progress evaporate and suffer the return of the privileged, thirsty for blood over their past choice of Lula as leader.
Before they head to the polls for their final choice, however, Brazilian electors should take a quick glance at their neighbouring Argentina and its three-year flirt with a right wing government -- one that pales in comparison with what they may expect from Jair Bolsonaro.
And yes, the supporters of the leftist Workers’ Party candidate Fernando Haddad, only need to look at Venezuela for the example of what happens when Marxists gain control.

Oct 08th, 2018 - 04:46 pm - Link - Report abuse +2you really need to tone down your criticism of Brazilian Democracy, which you praised under the PT.....only difference now is that the same democracy has rejected your pals.
And it's about time you got your facts right : 1st ) Dilma was impeached for breaking the Law of Fiscal Responsibility, as set out in the Constitution....the only thing during the whole impeachment process that did NOT follow Consitutional procedure, was the illegal separation of the final vote in the Senate (Calheiros & Lewandowsky against Brazil) which permitted Dilma to hang on to her political rights....but as that favoured your heroine, you think it's OK.
2nd), Lula was removed from the political scene because he is a crook, was caught in the act, tried and convicted....normal procedure. The fact that prison inmates can't run for president is just a consequence...a week ago I posted the sequence of events in the 'lavajato' which led to his imprisonment....didn't you see it, or was it too difficult for you to understand ? Funny how you ignore the facts and keep on believing what suits your fantasy.
But of course, you must have a crystal ball, and have a privileged view of the future...no es así, Enrique ?
Tell me Reekie, are you familiar with the Foro de São Paulo ? Look at it's founders, its objective, and learn something about PT-style democracy.

LONG LIVE CORRUPTION!
Mark Weisbrot explains that the US role in overthrowing Dilma Rousseff and imprisoning Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is not unique. ...Weisbrot says that although we already have enough evidence to show a US role in the 2016 ouster of Dilma Rousseff, it is just the tip of the iceberg. “The US Department of Justice participated in the whole Car Wash investigation and other corruption with Judge Moro’s railroading and unjust imprisonment of Lula.

The growth of Bolsonarian fascism in the final stretch of the election campaign, turbo charged by an avalanche of fake news disseminated on the internet, is not surprising. It is an old tactic developed by American and British intelligence agencies, with the goal of manipulating public opinion and influencing political processes and elections. It was used in the Ukraine, in the Arab Spring and in Brazil during 2013.

The Central Intelligence Agency has not much of a role to play; since the locally cultivated - home-grown - intelligence [or rather the lack of it] is much more efficient:
