Brazil’s far-right president-elect, Jair Bolsonaro, is likely to tap army generals and an ultra-free-market economist for key roles in his cabinet. The former army captain styles himself as an outsider, even though he has spent a long career in Congress, and has mostly sought prospective ministers with little political experience. “That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.” Christopher Hitchens
”Presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro (PSL) will be invited for the first summit of Movement, a nationalist, populist and ultra-right group formed in Europe.
The group is Steve Bannon's brainchild. Bannon, a former advisor of Donald Trump, has already met with one of Bolsonaro's sons in New York.
The group's goal is to have its inaugural summit in mid-January in Brussels. The organizers hope to attract members of the Trump administration and representatives from the Tea Party, a conservative movement with the Republican Party.”

The drug market is downtown because that’s where the homeless 'n addicts hang out…move it to the distant suburbs, ‘n you’d probably see the druggies wandering aimlessly like the ‘walking dead’. The main complaint of social workers is the addicts never think they need help. Very few actually agree to be treated.
Terry will never admit he got it all wrong….he either insists - because besides being stupid, he’s stubborn – or, he simply changes the subject. Even Adriana Carranco of “The Atlantic” (THs unreliable source) is INcapable of translating what B said, ‘n translates it as “his wife’s ‘weakness’ ” (which in fact, was a joke abt a ‘moment of weakness’...of his)…but TH laps it up, ‘n has now decided to go off at a tangent to criticize B for his ‘alleged’ comments on women…well, let’s correct those twisted half-truths ‘n ustand what was really said, in context :
In a 2016 interview with TV presenter Luciana Gimenez (Mick Jagger’s ex), B claimed he never “defended” lower salaries for women. He explained that there’s no difference in the public sector, ‘n in the private sector, the CLT (Labor Law Consolidation) is supposed to guarantee equal pay, but it was not his responsibility to make employers comply. He did however admit that if he had private employees he would probably pay the women less….“becos they get pregnant, take 6 months leave, abandon the job to get married etc”…when he mentioned that many women earn far more than men, Luciana tried to contradict him, but when asked if she earned more than B, she just gave a yellow grin. Just shows what happens when a group of women, anti-Bolsonaro, create a movement (#Ele Não) against him, 'n twist the truth...fake news.

I suppose you're right. And when I read the article that had interviews with the addicts, they said it was the only place they felt accepted. If they don't want treatment then it's pretty hopeless trying to force them to accept it.
Terry will never admit he got it all wrong
And if he does, it's a 'mistake of fact' or someone else's fault. He can't comprehend that other people have different knowledge, experiences, and beliefs to him, so he thinks anyone who disagrees with him must be lying.
[Bolsonaro] did however admit that if he had private employees he would probably pay the women less
So he admitted he'd break the law in order to discriminate against people... wonderful. What's wrong with paying people according to the work they do? There are good employees and useless ones of both genders. Anyway, after seeing my sisters do it, I think women should be paid *more* because they get pregnant - that shit's hard work. Absolutely NOT... If he did that he would NOT be breaking the law....he was not referring to company employees but to home servants....if you take them on, obviously you need to respect the minimum wage, as well as their rights, guaranteed by the labour laws, but as they are not covered by the CLT, there is no obligation to pay equal salaries....you can negotiate as you take them on...totally different to a company.
When Congress forced families to extend some 'company-type' rights to their maids,
many were sacked.....families don't have the same resources as companies do.

Nov 07th, 2018 - 06:22 pm - Link - Report abuse 0 just be acting immorally instead of illegally....technically, yes...but if a household has 2 cooks, male & female, it's not a matter of paying one more than the other, but a matter of what the cook asks for/ negotiates as their salary...if you were to take on a 2nd cook (man or woman) and you are prepared to pay up to $ 20,000 per year, but he/she asks for only $ 15,000, what would you do ?
His reply to Luciana Gimenez was intended to counter a provocative question (why do men always get paid more than women ?), trying to corner him....in those situations, many times, it doesn't matter what you say, it'll never the right answer. My belief is every professional should know his/her own value, and if the company is prepared to pay what you ask for, that is the bottom line. Why do you think employers always ask, ...and what salary are you asking for ?
No point in imagining if he announced he would pay black employees less than white ones, as besides being a preposterous proposition, it didn't happen /wouldn't be allowed.....'n, I see nothing to support your idea that conditions for black people are unlikely to improve under his rule....why would you single-out black people ? the poor, black, or white, will progress in the same manner....under the PT, under Bolsonaro.
and I shouldn't think laws on equal pay would be particularly onerous for home servants, surely most people don't have more than one?
Even one ...you'd be surprised....13 salaries, 1 month's vacation, holiday bonus, retirement fund (FGTS), social security (INSS), overtime (paid in double, if occurs), 40% fine on the balance of their retirement fund if you sack them without just cause....which even then opens you up to possible prosecution....and if you, being an individual and not 100% familiar with/up to date with the labor laws, make a mistake, you get fined....the expense chews up a good part of a middle-class family's income, so it's becoming a thing of the past for many
the expense chews up a good part of a middle-class family's income, so it's becoming a thing of the past for many
Nov 07th, 2018 - 07:39 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I'm afraid I can't feel very sympathetic, because I've never in my life met anyone who employed a servant full time. It's just not remotely economic for ordinary families here; if you are well off you can get someone to come in and clean for a few hours once a week, either directly or through an agency who will handle the employment issues for you, but that's about it. It's a penalty of the country developing, as only when there are a large number of very poor people available is it economic for a family on ordinary wages to employ one. (The alternative is to hire servants from poor foreign countries on a limited visa, if Brazil does get richer then perhaps that will become popular.)
No point in imagining if he “announced he would pay black employees less than white ones”
Why not? If you think that's so preposterous, then maybe you'll understand my reaction to B better, as to me there's little difference between the two statements. And the second bit was also part of my hypothetical: I would not expect conditions for black people to improve under an imaginary president who said he would pay them less, just as I do not expect conditions for women in Brazil to improve under Bolsonaro.
As for why men are paid more, that's a complicated question. I'd say one reason is men are more ambitious in general, going after promotions, and more confident/arrogant about their achievements and in demanding a pay rise. But people are also more willing to accept that behaviour from men; women who act the same way get pilloried - see Hilary Clinton. Anyway, IMO the more backwards the country, the more it's due to simple sexism.

Nov 08th, 2018 - 04:56 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Last paragraph of my abv post is why B was against the law (for domestic servants) that instituted those rights...he said it needed to be better thought out, or jobs would be lost....they were. A domestic servant in Brazil, is typically someone with a very poor education, no qualification, so 'that' source of employment was very important to them.
I'm afraid I can't feel very sympathetic, because I've never in my life met anyone who employed a servant full time......In the UK, neither have I.
Well before the law was passed, I had a woman come in twice a week ; I always paid more than the going-price in the market (to avoid insatisfaction), so much so she never had to ask for an increase. Although she only stayed about 4 or 5 hours/day (not that much to do), she was paid for 8, and on top of that, her hours were flexible. I paid for her transport (2 buses either way), gave her 30 days vacation and a 13th salary. When the law was being discussed in Congress, I could see sh*t was going to hit the fan....before the law 'was' passed, she left, to join her daughter in some small biz they wanted to open....just as well, as I was not keen on keeping her on, as the cost would not only increase considerably, and because I did not fancy getting caught up in the legal 'imbroglio' Congress was preparing..
I don't know why you insist B will single out the blacks...he will not have the power for such crap ; he has never even insinuated it ; and just fyi, one of my gym instructors has been a personal friend of Eduardo Bolsonaro for years, and knows Jair...in view of all this crap flying around, he showed me some photos in his cellphone, where Bolsonaro and many black friends appear in various situations....from years ago, to present-day.
As for why men are paid more, that's a complicated question.....yes it is. And you seem to agree it's a global thing....not a nasty policy invented by B, as the fake news claims.. But I'm sure 'ambitious' women get ahead as well...
@JB
Nov 08th, 2018 - 08:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0There's something to be said on both sides; domestic employees should have rights like any others, but families are not set up to deal with it like companies are. Would it not be sensible to have an agency employ the workers, then the family pays the agency and they take care of all the paperwork and regulations, sick pay and so one? It would cost more but be much less of a headache. Did this woman work only for you or also for other people? Because if she worked for many people, that's more like being self-employed.
I don't know why you insist B will single out the blacks
I'm not! It was a hypothetical question: what would happen if some other president said a similar thing to Bolsonaro, but about a different group. That's why I said 'an imaginary president'. And I find it slightly strange your gym instructor showed you the photographs - I haven't heard that B is prejudiced against black people, so why did he feel the need to prove he isn't?
not a nasty policy invented by B
I'm sure no one serious is saying that. But I don't care who invents a nasty policy, or whether other countries are worse. It's still a bad thing to encourage it.
I'm sure 'ambitious' women get ahead as well
Now, maybe. How many did back when you were young? How many were in Congress, for example?

Re Bolsonaro, the left is watching him, almost spying on him, to try to catch him out and publicize any slip-up, and if they can't find one, invent it..
Here you hear people accusing him of being racist, spreading fake news on social network,
just to say something nasty about him...but seems it finds resonance amongst those who want to believe the worst. Serious people are not saying it, people who aren't serious, are.
Now, maybe. How many did back when you were young?
'Now, maybe ?' of course, times change....and I never said anything against it, and besides, personally believe if a woman is a competent professional (in a company) she should receive the same salary as men in equivalent jobs...in my last company, I took on quite a few, there was no discrimination....their level of experience and competence determined where they'd fit in and their pay grade.
In Congress, I'm not sure, but numbers are increasing....on the other hand, in politics you cannot 'oblige' women to run for office, to fulfil quotas (as now exists here...absurd), but those that have shown their vocation, get in....nothing stops them, other than party philosphy.

the UK is light-years ahead of Brazil with regards to labor laws
Nov 09th, 2018 - 10:26 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I don't know that that's true. They're different, but in some ways Brazil's laws are more favourable to workers. Our laws were gutted by Thatcher in the 80s after she defeated the unions, and the country has been out of balance since then, with London and the SE doing well, and other areas struggling.
Anyway, I'd expect agencies to cost more, especially because you can't just pay them in cash and not mention it to the taxman. The cash discount is very much a thing here.
Re Lula, why did he say that? Like, what was the context? And why was he arranging that guy's tie? That's weird.

I didn't know there were quotas in Brazil, I'm very surprised tbh. How do they work?
”personally believe if a woman is a competent professional (in a company) she should receive the same salary as men in equivalent jobs”
I wish B agreed with you. But yeah, times change, in the UK and in Brazil. It's true that what is considered acceptable has changed in only ten years, and I don't want to go back, not 10 years and god forbid 50, which is why I must fight against the right.
