The Argentine Navy confirmed early Saturday morning that the missing ARA San Juan submarine which disappeared in the South Atlantic on 15 November a year ago, with a crew of 44, has been found. The discovery was also announced by the Argentine Defense ministry and the United States company, Ocean Infinity, leading the search for the vessel, and it happens exactly one year and one day after all contact was lost with the vessel sailing from Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego to its base in Mar del Plata. Hopefully this will mean some closure for the relatives. Difficult lift from that depth.

What is the brownish stuff on the waterline of the bow of the sub? If it is seaweed or shell life, it confirms that maintenance was bad and the sub unfit for sea duty..

If the lifting would be difficult that almost certainly means very expensive. Wouldn't it be kindest to declare the site a grave and on the nearest shore establish some kind of memorial to give people a point to which they can go to pay their respects to those who died in this tragedy?

Argentina has formally confirmed that there will be no recovery of the submarine. The criminal coverup will succeed and the b*stards responsible will go unpunished.

viejopatagon - the “brownish stuff” is a fat hessian rope that essentially acts as a bumper in the dock.

I heard a sad and remarkable story about the female crew member's dog. Apparently it went to the dock every day to wait for her return but when they announced that the sub's wreck had been found the dog died! A remarkable coincidence.

Sometimes, I honestly don't understand certain people that, due to their “sea man” condition, must be aware of the “almost” impossible task of bringing the ARA San Juan remains back to the surface. It is at 907 meters deep so, a rescue must be done at 91/92 atm of pressure, extremely salty water and poor visibility to lift 2.200 tons of steel, and acid contaminated, water. Something like this has never been done before....The russian Kursk was at 100 meters and they wanted to save strategic secrets.

Tell us more about the criminal part of the incident. I've heard all sort of crazy things. One of them about the ARA San Juan doing commercial intelligence. Did you hear anything about that?

Remarkable indeed. I now believe that this story isn't true.
