“Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Wednesday that Argentina was heading for chaos as “leftist bandits” who performed well in the primary election will follow the path of Venezuela, which is mired in a deep economic crisis.”

Yes, the collapse in the markets and peso is because nobody wants to do business with a K-led Argentina. They don't trust them, given their track record of stealing companies and assets. So everyone is getting out in anticipation of that happening so this is just a taste of the future if the Ks get back in. Things will get worse and nobody will lend Argentina anything so the path to Venezuela is pretty much inevitable.

Don't be such a catastrophist. Certainly no one was keen to lend to Argentina after the default in 2000, yet 12 years of K rule did not turn the country into Venezuela. Unlike there, it ended with a peaceful transition of power. Alberto is more centrist than Cristina, so things are unlikely to worse this time around, right?

    DT,

    “Don't be such a catastrophist.”

    Or realist?

“...12 years of K rule did not turn the country into Venezuela.”

No, but that was the direction it was headed.

“Unlike there, it ended with a peaceful transition of power.”

True, but CFK was reluctant. She didn't hand over the baton.

“Alberto is more centrist than Cristina, so things are unlikely to worse this time around, right?”

Maybe so, if he has the correct skills and policies. How much power will CFK have over him? Will he just be a puppet? Or does he have the power to fire CFK if she proves to be corrupt and/or incompetent?

It's not being a realist to say the path to Venezuela is inevitable. Of all the 'pink tide' countries it's the only one to reach that level of dysfunction, and no leader aspires to end up running a failed state with the US threatening invasion.

I don't know if Alberto Fernandez has the right skills and practices, but after 4 years and an IMF bailout, it's apparent that Macri doesn't.

CFK letting someone else stand for president and going for vice herself suggests she realises people don't want to go back to the past but try something new. How far that'll be reflected in policy is another question. Do you know how much support Alberto has on his own, outside of CFK's party? If he's dependent on her supporters in Congress then she'll have a lot of influence.

“CFK letting someone else stand for president and going for vice herself suggests she realises people don't want to go back to the past but try something new.”

Or she knows she won't lose her immunity from prosecution if Alberto loses. Which seems most likely?

“Do you know how much support Alberto has on his own, outside of CFK's party?”

I don't know, but I believe the polls were showing that CFK couldn't be certain of beating Macri on her own.

“If he's dependent on her supporters in Congress then she'll have a lot of influence.”

Indeed, but your comment raises questions to me about the content of Alberto's recent phone call with Macri. Maybe he won't need CFK's support if he has Macri's? I have no evidence for this, but in Argentina anything is possible. ;-)

It's time for Brazil to pull out of Mercosur the moment Macri loses power.

It may be a lot better for Mercosur to avoid this particular cesspool of corruption.
