Indeed, a significant victory for the Chilean people who took to the streets, and proof that the possibility to improve the lot of the majority of the citizens had been there all the time -- it just did not occur to the wealthy and the politicians who represent them to apply those measures.

Too bad that president Piñera “came to his senses” after sending many of his country people to the cemetery or hospital in the belief that fear would make the citizens scramble for cover.

The events in Chile have seen the violent death of another neo-liberal myth.

    Think,

    You right!

My phrase is between quotation marks -- meaning Piñera did not at all come to his senses -- instead, he is trying to trick the Chileans and win time while keeping the troops in the street. While he said he heard the people “loud and clear,” he kept a threatening tone to those who “break the order.”

The “hands up” movement shows Chileans not longer tolerate their country's deep inequality -- and that may signal a change of direction for many Latin American countries, together with the election that will chase el gato away on Sunday.

Señor Villegas is a well known journalist and television personality with his own YouTube channel. I shared his Sunday's initial reaction of what was still a shock to all of us here.

The indigenous people here are obviously not the group behind the coordinated rapid severe assault disrupting my dear country.

He used to adhere to Marxism, but he's since become more of an intellectual socialist, which I believe is an oxymoron. He's also highly intelligent and is generally diametrically opposite to my political beliefs.

(Madam Lafarge and her circle of her French communist (but I repeat myself) friends introduced us. Although he has poor taste in watches, he does plays a challenging game of chess.

Unfortunately THINK has missed the big picture...

In the growing opinion of several well informed people here, is there are several foreign “dark hands” (Definitely encouraged by Maduro and the Cuban government) that were/are involved in a coordinated simultaneous attack to cause complete disruption of the Piñera presidency, in part because Chile will be hosting the APEC in December. (Both Trump and Xi will be attending.)

Piñera has been highly critical of Maduro in Venezuela and it makes sense he would support embarrassing the “successful Chile model” that has been praised internationally.

Fernando Villegas is somewhat like of the “Jeremy Corbyn political mindset” of Chile, which is obviously opposite of mine. Fernando's wife, Ivette is a francophone conspirator of Madam Lafarge... Piñera has to make serious concessions in order to return to normalcy. The expectations from someone I personally know at the Central Bank is we will see a dramatic turn in the real net GDP based on the effects of significant national infrastructure damage, public and private, combined with the deminished worker productivity and earnings. Add that to an anticipated worldwide economic downturn (excepting the USA) with lower earnings from copper (which Chile directly and indirectly through taxes receives); combined with a dramatic budget deficit in subsidizing all the economic concessions by the President --- will result in a near 0% net GDP.

The denial displayed by a Chilean commentator in this forum shows a typical reaction of supporters of inequality.

To attribute -- without proof -- this mobilization of Chileans descending to the streets in defiance of water cannons, tear gas, arrests and beatings that have so far left at least 18 dead to some kind of international conspiracy borders on ridicule.

Such blatant denial echoes that of president Piñera at the beginning of the demonstrations, when he stated that “we are at war with a powerful enemy,” and as seven people laid dead called demonstrators “criminals” on a mission to “destroy our democracy” with a high degree of “organizational logistic.” Come on.

What Chile displays now with clarity is the deep disconnection -- and contempt -- that the Latin American elites have for ordinary citizens. Obscenely wealthy individuals fear the masses and that same prompts their first reflexes -- an immediate recourse to violence when those same citizens express their discontent.

Piñera's initial defiance contrasts with his later requests for forgiveness assorted with the latest firing of his cabinet -- while keeping the troops on the streets -- which shows a man trying to hang on to a waning power -- while the citizens appear to have none of that.

The Chilean events, connected to those in Ecuador, Brazil and Argentina may signal the beginning of the end of a powerful counter offensive based on lawfare and mainstream media instead of military coups to stave off popular options loosely defined as populists.

Perhaps Latin America may, at long last, shake off foreign powers and backward elites to enter the 21st. century.

I believe good social change will occur to address some of the economic inequality in my country, but I'm aware that Nicolas Maduro is celebrating with Champagne.

Several were killed by the police or soldiers, but several others were definitely killed by/due the anarchists causing the destruction. Bad things happen to anyone that in almost any country when heavy stones and Molotov cocktails are thrown against authorities.

Our current soldiers were never trained, nor adaptable for sustained riot control. It's a good thing that they've maintained self control, despite being pushed to the limit.

It is good that they are returning to bases and curfew is being, for the most areas, lifted. Chileans are good decent people, so are the majority of immigrants, but there are moments when some become animals. (Looting for plasma TVs is greed, setting fire to the building is criminal, but arson of a building with people inside is truly evil.)

As far as Trump Economic Nationalism, it seems to be working exceptionally well at the cost of upending world trade. Whomever your next PM is, whether it's Boris or ... will have to learn to coexist in a new trade alliance. The EU will also. Canada is nearly totally screwed and Mexico is hostage to tariffs. (Trump will win the 2020 election by a landslide.)

Meanwhile, we've planted another 23 hectares of avocados as international demand is exceptionally good. We just need to pay a higher tax rate and hire more security. As always, the disadvantaged are the real losers.

I love Chicureo's piece, talking about the hectares of avocados they planted.

I knew the security services had killed people since then, but I did not know the army was never trained in riot control. That makes Piñera's decision to send them worse than irresponsible. It's lucky things haven't gone even more badly.

I hope this can be the end of the violence and Chile will resolve the underlying issues that are clearly of long standing. And also that next time there are protests, the authorities learn from this and deal with them in a more constructive manner.

As for Trump, you know I don't agree with you (nor have I noticed Canada having any particular problems). But even taking your view, I find it odd to say the least, to admire a foreign leader for enriching their country at the expense of your own, and of you personally. But then, if you are planting more avocados for export, you can't be seriously anticipating a world economic downturn anyway.

    EM
Provocateurs? Sounds like your views are not so far from Chicureo's after all. While he sees the hand of Venezuelan (or Cuban) agents in planning the protests, you think the Chilean services sent their own agents to encourage looting supermarkets and setting fire to buses? In the circumstances, that seems even more unlikely.

As USA consumers are realizing higher net incomes, demand for healthy highly nutritional and exceptionally delicious Hass variety avocados will continue to increase. As our older table grape vineyards are slowly being changed over to avocado orchards, we enjoy higher profits from less labor intense production and achieve substantially greater profits.

Those having the good judgement in realizing the value of purchasing water rights are seeing remarkable exponential value for their investment. As I mentioned in a long ago post, my father and uncle convinced our family to purchase those rights back in the late 1970's through the 1980's at nominal cost.

As Michelle Bachelet decided during her second Presidential term to immigrate thousands of unskilled Haitians to my country, there is an excess of agricultural seasonal low cost farm workers available for harvesting. (The traditional campesinos here are obviously furious about this.)

The Allende socialist reforma agraria forced our family to relocate our farming to marginal undesirable hillsides and change crops to vineyards resulting in obtaining water rights. (We had to borrow the money as we were nearly broke.)

The socialist minded Bachelet government insured we will continue to have an excellent supply of low cost seasonal workers to harvest with. Despite my personal feelings, socialist policies have been extremely beneficial to my family.

I'm happy to see our country seriously address some social inequality issues, but THINK will tell you, things never really change. It's a Latin mindset...

Conversing with THINK is sort of like following the series of letters from the demon Uncle Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood. He cunningly mixes truth, fiction and his questionable ideology that's mildly annoying. ¿...“retired Captain”...?

As I mentioned, our previous socialist President Bachelet encouraged a massive immigration of unskilled functionally illiterate Haitians that have provided ample labor for seasonal agricultural harvests.

    https://www.voanews.com/americas/waves-migrants-head-chile-putting-strain-services

The best metrics are by harvest yield. In our case, it's less than 430 liters per kilo harvested. This is achieved with continuous monitoring of the soil moisture, tree transpiration rate and advanced drip irrigation delivery technology. (A comparison for yields is corn that was my family's traditional cash crop that requires 625 liters per kilo.)

If that sounds a lot of water, do a quick search on what it requires to produce a kilo of beef... It will really surprise you!

I should remind Uncle THINKtape, we are planting carbon-dioxide absorbing forests to reduce our carbon footprint. Even our perimeter security illumination is now 100% solar.

Avocados are a great source of vitamins C, E, K, and B-6, as well as riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, and potassium. They also provide lutein, beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids. What's most important is that they're delicious!

At that time the humans still knew pretty well when a thing was proved and when it was not; and if it was proved they really believed it. They still connected thinking with doing and were prepared to alter their way of life as the result of a chain of reasoning. Hurting your largest export market isn't good for Chile, and the US also pulled out of the TPP deal. I know your government is a big fan of trade deals, but left was very opposed to this one, and perhaps you agreed with them?

Also, I had thought you said you exported a lot of avocados to Europe, but maybe I am misremembering. They're nutritious and can be tasty, but here they're an expensive import, exactly the sort of thing people would cut back in a recession. As for buying water rights, it was clearly a wise decision for your family, but IMO a very foolish one on your government's part to sell a renewable resource for a one time fee.

Re Think, I'm certainly not an advocate for the Diabolus chubutensis.

Well done; much better finding evidence rather than complaining. But what are those people following the police intending to do? I did happen to see a demonstration in Argentina, but the police were behind walls and the water cannons unused. And I don't believe our riot police exactly act like their Argie equivalents.

But you've been saying all along these protests were organised by teenagers. Do you really believe in either Venezuelans or government agents?

    EM
What I was thinking of was police starting violence by eg firing tear gas at peaceful protesters, which is common enough. But the deaths I read about in Chile did not happen in that sort of situation, most were killed in fires set by looters, and why and how would any government encourage that? Plus, a government might want to discredit ongoing peaceful protests by associating them with violence, but violent protests that turn peaceful are the opposite of that pattern. Those are some of the reasons I'm sceptical of your suggestion.

Despite what you may think, average net incomes in the USA have risen dramatically. In a little over two years, an increase over $5k per middle-class household and unemployment is at a 50 year low. (African-American and Hispanic unemployment the lowest in history.)

The TPP was determined to be too accommodating to the other countries. The new Trump trade policy is USA first. His trade negotiators are notoriously brutal.

Our UK export program remains fantastic, with my daughter recently obtaining a TESCO NURTURE Gold certification for our product. (Extremely difficult to achieve.) The USA however we see almost an unlimited demand. We still produce wine and table grapes, but our vineyards are slowly being converted.

Throughout most Western countries countries the world, water rights are considered private property. The Chilean government does however has the right to fairly proportionally adjust the amount of water we are able to use.

You do know that soil itself is a “renewable resource”? Also, owners have to pay property taxes on land as well as water rights. Nothing is truly free...

Nice use of the passive voice there. ;) If it was really too accommodating then Chile missed out on a great deal, and if it wasn't then all the countries missed out on a good one. Maybe your negotiators aren't brutal enough?

Re income and employment, those stats are all fake anyway; Trump said so. And although I wish Americans well in general, I'm a lot more interested in their effect on the rest of the world than what they do at home.

The UK isn't a good model for water rights, being a famously damp place (though there have been shortages in the last few years due to climate change). Given the amount available is likely to fall in Chile, too, it may not be sustainable to keep growing such thirsty crops in much of the country. Do grapes need as much water as avocados? As for land ownership, that is an even more contentious topic.

I wouldn't question your intelligence, but you do know China wasn't in the TPP? One of the US's main goals in pushing it was to increase their support and influence in China's neighbours, as China has been busy increasing theirs in the Americas and around the world. They've gone hard into the economic imperialism business and even several countries in Europe have now embraced China's belt and road initiative. Look at how their influence extends into Hollywood and the recent free speech scandal with the NBA. Western countries are afraid to criticise China's horrible human rights record and even as Trump attacks them, they're profiting from the division his other policies caused. Making an enemy of everyone at once does not exactly scream Machiavellian.

IMO if anything limits China's expansion now it will not be Trump or any other leader, but a decision they made 40 years ago: the one child policy. It's really gonna bite economically as the huge older generation retires leaving a much smaller one working.

Anyway, I'm glad your billionaire businessman president is not too 'brutal'. Sending the army into the streets could already have turned out a lot worse.

Yes, China was not one of the 12 countries. (I personally was a fan of the TPP as it would have been VERY beneficial to my country.) You miss however why the US strategic 180degree change on the agreement was all about China.

Trump is an unapologetic nationalist, and could care less about other countries not cooperating with his agenda. All he cares about is what HE THINKS is best for the USA.

The water statistics quoted are completely misleading. 4. Growers do over-plant their land and do steal water. They should be punished appropriately and it's bad for my country's image. I have no sympathy for them. 5. We wisely comply with the law because we have a long term commitment to our business. Fortunately Malthus was wrong about human behaviour, but that doesn't mean we don't have problems. There's also the option of trying to find a technological solution to climate change.

    Mr.DemonTree

    A ***“Technological Solution”*** already exists...
    Those amazingly advanced mecanisms are called...: “ T. R. E. E. S ”

Combined with some emissions cuts..., economic adaptation..., other carbon removal methods and solar geoengineering..., it may work...

All in Greta's “Mein Kampf”..., laddie...

I'm all for planting more trees, there really isn't enough forest in this country. But Brazil and Bolivia seem more interested in burning theirs down.

Do Chicureo's avocado trees offset the carbon emissions from transporting the fruit around the world in refrigerated boats?

    Estimado THINK and DemonTree

Ok, you've both convinced me. I will try to increase my efforts to plant more Persea americana forests to help reduce all that nasty CO2 from the Earth's atmosphere. (Maybe I can even sell carbon offset credits to the owners of those Danish folks at Maersk...)

Additionally, I promise to encourage people to switch their consumption of animal dietary-fat to a far more delicious healthily plant derived alternative, which is needed for the body to absorb fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A, D, E, and K. Avocados provides the body with nine calories of energy per gram of fat. Additionally, the body also uses fat to produce hormones, signal hunger, regulate body temperature, and construct cell membranes.

Providing needed employment and contributing to the international economy, while reducing CO2 in the atmosphere, will be my passion to help humanity during this global crisis.

    Shicuréo... hermanito...

I knew that you would see the light after listening to Greta..., my friend...

After all... you also could see the truth about the ongoing Anti-Shilean Word Conspiration..., because the same type of “rare foreign chemical accelerant”...( aka gasoline ;-)... was used everywhere under the riots...

I hear that they arrested one of those Venezuelo-Cuban agitators of yours...! He was under cover as a chubby 35 years old Shilean Math Professor at the Universidad Catolica...., huhhh...?
    Dead over the Universidad Catolica...!
    Long live el Colo Colo...!

Speaking about Football... I see that the “Pichon de Pinochet” has just cancelled the APEC and the COP25... Fkuck that irrelevant stuff...!!!
As long as you Shilenos keep your word about River-Flamengo...

They found more than one cockroach... There's a large nest that needs to be exposed. The insurance companies are paying significant rewards for information.

APEC vs COP25... I feel melancholy loosing the positive-image-projection of Chile being the MODEL of our continent vs. avoiding hosting all the enviro-anarchist lunatics. It's sort of like watching a your new BMW sedan going over a cliff driven by your belle-mère... vraie mélancolie!

I can't other than accept your tipping of your Louis XVI..., hermanito...

Fun game..., but I must admit my surprise that Mme. Defarge allowed you that much excitement...

Better than letting you out into the streets..., wearing a gilet jaune and a stick..., chasing Vehnehzuehlahn aliens..., I reckon...

Rest now and enjoy your patriach's autumn in the certainty that jeune fille Mlle Defarge ll is not coming to chase you...
