Argentina's new president Alberto Fernandez, a man who drove his own Toyota car to the sworn-in ceremony and helped outgoing vice-president Gabriela Michetti's wheelchair into the hall, made an initial commitment to govern for all Argentines, while coming to the help of those who were hit harder by the policies of Mauricio Macri as a first priority.

While the task is enormous, the man looks qualified for the task, both technically and humanly, and the team of officials he has assembled is impressive both in terms of experience, credentials and human qualities.

It will be very interesting to follow the work of the Fernandez-Fernandez government.

That's nothing, Cameron used to cycle to the House of Commons... followed by a car with his documents.

Aren't you worried someone will take potshots at Fernandez while he's driving along Av Sarmiento in his Corolla?

Well...in Argentina it is a big deal. None of the past Argentine presidents have done that before, although Arturo Illia who was deposed by the military in 1966 was an extremely modest man.

Also, similarly to Nestor Kirchner, Alberto is not afraid of contact with people. If you saw the videos you may have noticed he was holding the wheel with one hand while to the citizens as he went.

Not even your beloved Cristina? ;)

But fair enough. I was in BA for the G20 so I saw a lot of limos and SUVs with tinted windows driving around surrounded by motorcycle escorts. I assume it was for security, but no one is going to be waving from one of those. It's nice your new president is making himself more approachable. Meanwhile we are stuck with Boris, who isn't a fool but does play one on TV. :(

    Not even her!

But yeah...Boris. That was depressing news indeed. My impression is, the Brits are shooting themselves in the foot. The western world is having a bad case of flu, but to offer some consolation, the Argentines have denied the 'cat' a second term in office -- which hadn't happened since our 1983 return to democracy.

I'm glad not all Argentines are celebrating other people's misfortune. These cruel right-wing views are spreading all across Europe, and Latin America, too. The fake news we've seen is unreal, and no country is immune. Makes me wonder whether if Scioli had won the last election Argentina would have ended up like Brazil. But the left have managed to unite there now, very different to Britain.

Absolutely agree with your qualification of the right-wing views as cruel. I would add they make appeal to the worst instincts that exist in us human beings. It's going to take a lot of courage and effort to return to a civilized world.
