“Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani took to Twitter to call the crash a “great tragedy” and “unforgivable mistake.” ”.....but Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif still tried to wiggle out of it and blame the US.....to be expected.

Well certainly it was a sad accident triggered by an automated SAM missile defense system. Too many innocent people died and apparently many Iranians are very angry with their own government.

Jack, did you notice the pathetic accusation made against you by a adolescent mendacious basement dwelling idiot? Apparently you upset him with common sense and known fact.

So are many Americans. They are NOT happy their government is risking starting a war for no reason.

I also heard that the US didn't know Suleimani was at the airport and killed him by mistake, but refused to admit it afterwards so as not to lose face. Probably just a rumour though.

The Iranians had no choice but to admit it, short of destroying all the wreckage and bodies they were not going to be able to cover it up.

The Iranian people were already unhappy with their gov, right up until Donald J wacked Suleimani.

Wouldn’t surprise me if some or other foreign secret service “arranged” for the missile battery to “accidentally” fire.

Otherwise it doesn’t say much for the state of Iranian air defences, shooting down a plane squawking (transponder on) on an airport flight path used by dozens of civil aircraft every day.

What would happen if they got into a major exchange of fire with the Americans?

The Iranians are essentially playing bluff (even they know they cannot win), against an American president for whom bluffing is way too subtle to understand, and who is two sticks short of a bundle to start with.

    Good luck with that.

Although Bjork's face was beautiful, I could not hear any sound from the video. Regarding the cured salmon and the gravlax adventures, we were very satisfied from the results. (Using beets for color is very appealing.)

Today Madame Defarge and I will be having carpaccio and caprese salad using goat cheese accompanied with espumante Viña Mar Champenoise Brut.

The gringos did not start a war, but instead ruthlessly eliminate an avowed enemy responsible for the deaths of NATO soldiers and innocent civilians.

Despite the continuous “Death to America” rhetoric, the Iranians are financially crippled and left with only random acts of terrorism to promote their agenda.

By the way, the US Navy in 1988 actually shot down an Iranian civilian airliner using the same failed automated defense.

I want my half hour of life lost trying to listen to Bjork and watching Pamela on a program I didn't even know existed. I disagree with her selections in three categories, but again she's of the wrong political party.

The real losers of the past unfortunate protests are the poor and lower middle class. Unemployment in the Aconcagua Valley currently surpasses 20%, in the middle of the annual fruit harvest!

It's a forgone conclusion that the Socialist Party will win in the next presidential elections, but Piñera has already given many of their concessions, including excessive taxes.

If Socialists try to legislate even higher taxes, they'll lose the moderate middle class and tank the economy.

    Meanwhile...

The most popular Twitter message today in Iran, was a tweet in Farsi to the Iranian public from Trump's account.

Also amazing today, was Iranian university students protesting against their government. Many of them even refused to walk on painted flags of the USA and Israel.

As a final footnote: Although I didn't have the privilege to slop any of the pigs, I did today personally harvest some wonderful heirloom tomatoes and sweet basil leaves...

I suppose it's the whole 'post truth' thing. Every day I see an army of idiots on the Internet swearing black is white and up is down (and war is peace and ignorance is strength), so why should Iran tell the truth? No matter how strong the evidence there'd be someone to make a YouTube video 'proving' the crash was faked by America just to discredit Iran, and millions of people willing to believe it.

Agree about the cheese on toast, it's amazing what a difference good ingredients make. I just got back from Yorkshire where we visited the Wensleydale cheese factory and sampled all the cheeses they make.

    DemonTree and Jack,

I'm sticking with the traditional “Latino/Latina” forms of address.

Interesting to see the actual footage of the two missiles hitting the fated airliner on TV this morning. They arrested the poor Iranian that released the footage.

We've been sweltering here in Santiago, but tomorrow I'll be in the Aconcagua valley at the farm. We start harvesting table grapes next month and the preparation for the packing is extensive.

Unemployment there is the worst I've seen in two decades. People are actively seeking work as harvesters at an unprecedented rate. The traditional campesinos are notably unhappy with the large number of foreigners competing for their jobs and willing to work at lower wages.

Our drones/UAVs have proven their worth in security protection alone.

Regarding fruit salads: In the Aconcagua valley there are current harvests of peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines and a few grapes. Mangos, passion fruit, pineapples and bananas have to be imported. We do however have cherimoyas from the north, which are wonderful.

And how would the Iranians be sure the bases had been evacuated ? anyway, shortly after the attack, the local news showed one of the ayatollahs (according to the translation) boasting the death of at least 80 Americans....then, just another lie, later recanted (when given the opportunity to avoid the escalation of mutual aggression).

We get peaches and nectarines from Chile (and the US), as well as plums....absolutely delicious.....not to mention the cherries from Washington State. Local pineapples, especially the Hawaiian type, are sweet and juicy - just have to know when to cut them open, which is relatively easy...when they start to exude a delicious smell and juice starts to appear where the stalk was. Grapes (many seedless varieties) are also damned good.

    Jack,

We've been enjoying the cherries from the south too. We have on our farm a few ancient persimmon as well as fig trees (Calmeria and Mission varieties) and 4 pluot trees along with a few varieties of citrus, walnut, almond, pecan and pistachios. (
The pistachios has been a failure, because the trees need higher temperatures.)

We've experimented with kiwi and had a horrible experience planting 4 hectares of feijoa (pineapple guava or guavasteen), but now we're commercially focused on avocados with table and wine grapes in our frost prone areas.

Speaking of pineapple, I love how you Brazilians grill them.

We only get cherries around Christmas time, and are big and fleshy, about the size of lychees. About 30 years ago, I met a kiwi grower from NZ, and I felt tempted to try planting them on the land, but we concluded it wasn't the ideal 'terroir'.

At our home in Chicureo we have six fruit trees that are grafted with several varieties. In the springtime the trees bloom in multi-colors, but most the fruit has to be given away. No avocados however, because of the frost threat.

We used to dry fruit, but it's far to time consuming and not very profitable. We still make raisins, as a byproduct of our table grapes.

There really is help for Gollum:

This is what the news said:

They couldn't be sure of zero casualties, but they could try and minimise them. As for the Ayatollah, wonder if the translation was accurate? Perhaps it was meant for internal consumption if so.

Re pineapples, they don't ripen after being exported, and they can't transport them fully ripe, so they're never very good. Mangos and avocados ripen if left out of the fridge but it's hard to get them at the right stage. Not surprising all these fruits are better in the countries they are grown, though.

Is the blackberry the same that grows wild in England? simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackberry#/media/File:Blackberry_fruits10.jpg Bit risky to plant that unless you want your whole garden to turn into an impenetrable bramble thicket...

As for citrus trees, sure you can grow them north of 49 degrees - in a greenhouse. At Kew gardens they have a mango tree and it finally produced fruit after 20 years. Apparently it needs a dry season to promote fruiting.

Yes, it would seem that Iran launched a limited attack perhaps because of their concern the USA would mount a larger counterattack. We do however know that several missiles failed to reach their targets and there were amazingly no casualties reported.

The secret communications using the Swiss seems to have been well calculated, but who knows?

Iran economically really is in a terrible economic situation to go to war, because the USA has diabolically nearly destroyed their economy. (The Americans did the same thing to us in 1973.)

Yes, you can grow practically anything almost anywhere with a hothouse and can even artificially manipulate plant dormancy, but the comment was directed towards inhabitants of Canada who many reside north of 49degrees latitude...

Next time you shop for imported fruit, try smelling the blossom end when selecting. It's helpful with pineapples. Also, there are some premium varieties to look for.

Regarding blackberries: there are a multitude of varieties/cultivars including thornless. Personally, I prefer boysenberries, raspberries and loganberries. If you amend your soil to a higher acid level, blueberries would be an excellent choice for your climate.

And the plants can be very invasive.

Today I'm at the farm waiting for people that should have been here at 9AM, but this is Chile... I'm bored watching the national news on a 1985 Sony Trinitron tv which looks so primitive...

Seems like it was mostly a symbolic gesture, with perhaps the aim of showing what they could do and perhaps destroying some infrastructure, much like the US strikes on Syria a couple of years ago. No country is in a good position to go to war with the US, the Iranian government isn't going to do it unless they believe the alternative is swinging from a rope like Saddam. I doubt there's much appetite in the US for an even bigger Iraq-style debacle, either, but there are some rather crazy people in charge and it's all too easy to miscalculate these provocations.

Surprisingly 72% of Canadians live below the 49th parallel, they probably still can't grow citrus trees, though. North America is never as far north as you think it is.

Sometimes they sell cultivated blackberries in the shops. They're huge and sweet and have about 1/10th of the flavour of the wild variety; I don't see the point. At our old house I hacked the brambles down to the ground with a hedge trimmer, but they grew back in a few months. Think I'll try and avoid letting any grow in the new garden. I do have three blueberry bushes in pots which I'm planning to plant out now we've moved. My heather did pretty well so hopefully the soil is not too alkaline.

    “1985 Sony Trinitron tv”

    Estimado THINK and DemonTree

My appointment never arrived. Lunch today was quickly improvised with empanadas made by a wonderful old lady that lives in the area. No wine today, because I never drink alcohol when I'm angry.

THINK's video clip and seeing the morning news, reinforces why we rarely watch local programming, but if I was elsewhere, I could have watched the Paty Maldonado and Pamela Jiles catfight on a smart-TV linked by my iPhone.

Back in 1985, the massive 25” Sony color TV cost me some really serious money and it was the state of the art jewel in the corner of our Viña pied-à-terre.

Our office is located up in the hillside and has an assortment of screens, but the Trinitron resides as the only TV in our old farmhouse. This contrasts to almost every campesino in the valley has a large screen plasma (including recently looted during the unrest), connected to a satellite provider.

The perfectly functioning ignored TV is sort of a metaphor of the transition from our old pied-à-terre to what we have now. Madam Defarge likes to remind me la vie est trop courte pour boire du mauvais vin.

(I can say the same applies to watching Chilean television vs. watching something far more highly elevated, such as Argentine re-runs of “Un gallo para Esculapio”.)

DemonTree, I suggest you be careful transplanting your blueberry bushes because the soil acidity difference - as they thrive in high acid soil, with a large root zone.

And speaking of the 49th parallel... Did you know that in order to leave Detroit traveling to Windsor Canada, you cross the bridge going due SOUTH? Also curious is that I find Canadians tend to be far more polite, educated and civil than their southern neighbors, but then of course there are some real asinine idiots there as well.

Anyway, I'm spending the night here and will not leave the farm until I resolve an unexpected problem. No wine tonight.

The link from Reuters (regarding “...how would the Iranians be sure the bases had been evacuated ?”) is not particularly convincing......an “anonymous” source said Iran “was believed” to have deliberately missed...(American military personnel)”
It'll take more than that to convince me, and as far as the alleged death of Americans is concerned, it was transmitted over Iran's State TV, and by the official news agency (MEHR), the source supposedly being the Quds. The translation was the least of it.
But ok, it's possible that the iranians planned an ineffective attack 'n then bragged about killing Americans, one, to not step too hard on Uncle Sam's toes, and two, just a bit of Iranian bravado, to try to not lose face....which just reinforces my opinion of Iran's leadership.
Do you really believe they complied 100% with the terms of the nuclear treaty signed with BO in 2015 ? I don't....not even then.

But returning to a more pleasant subject, if you want to see one of the varieties of blackberries grown here, google “amora gigante portuguesa”. The ones we had on our land were a bit smaller, and sweet. Used to just pull them off in clusters - before the birds attacked them - rinse them in cold, clean water, and eat them by the handful.

The specific empanadas I had are very special, because the woman that made them knew my grandfather well. She still bakes bread, leaving a white handkerchief on a stick in front of her home signifying availability. (One of my favorite farm snacks is simply grapes with fresh Marraqueta bread.)

Elderberries grow in the hedges here, as well as blackcurrents and redcurrents. None are great for eating but they make good cordials. I also made slow gin and blackberry liqueur with fruit from my garden. Agree about dragon fruit, they look pretty but don't taste of much.

We also have a lot of streets planted with all male fruit trees so the local councils could avoid having to deal with fruit. It's caused a big increase in allergies.

I spent the night in the farmhouse alone which gave me a good chance to think through my current challenges. In 1985 we had our primary residence in Valparaiso and were part of the large ménage à famille that shared the house here, that as time progresses, becomes less used.

“Kaczynski wrote his documents on a typewriter without italics; he capitalized entire words to show emphasis. He always referred to himself as either ”we“ or ”FC“ (”Freedom Club”), though there is no evidence that he worked with others. Academics analyzed the writing and noted that it contains irregular spelling and hyphenation and other linguistic idiosyncrasies, which led them to conclude that Kaczynski was its author.”

    On Gollum :
Way above, Gollum stated (to Chicureo, 3 days ago) : “I have never stated where I live on a public forum. Hmm if this were true, where's the citation”.
So, he says he's never told us where he lives...'n he states he does not live in Canada...is it a lie or he has just been deported ? In either case, why so secretive ? And why does he get so upset when someone criticizes Canada ?
I think it's a great country (after all, I'm a citizen), but no country is perfect.

Then a bit lower, I posted, ”IF he lived in Canada, he'd (be only too proud to) say so“, to which an indignant Gollum replied : ”Well that confirms that you 'for fill' (what ?!) the statistical requirement of dumbness because I have told you previously, how I acquired my 'sobriquet', and where“.
Quick side note on ”Sobriquet” (how chic...'n pedantic) :- defined as “a nickname, sometimes assumed, but often given by another and being descriptive in nature”.
Presume he assumed the “sobriquet” of 'local legend', because he either misunderstood when they called him 'legendary local village idiot', OR perhaps, he became a legend as the champion lavatory cleaner for 10 years running, in the RAF.....which would probably mean he resides (or resided) in the UK...

But, 2 posts above, in reply to DT's comment “Jack is right about Terry, he's always refused to say where he lives...”, Gollum writes : ”The dummy (who ? me ?) was given that information at the time. The fact that he has forgotten is his problem, if does research he should find it”.
So now he claims he DID inform someone - me (JB), “...at the time...”, ('n on MP, a “public forum” !), but that I have forgotten”.

“I have never stated where I live on a public forum. Hmm if this were true, where's the citation”. (Gollum)

He claims “I have stated where I have lived in past”.....ah yes, those are the key words ...“in the past”.......to be honest, I must admit I don't bother reading his posts very carefully (waste of time) and have no intention of going back years looking for crap he may or may not have stated, or implied (even greater waste of time)....but I believe I do recall him having said he had once lived in Brazil...for a short while... in Bahia, I think.....and that was the source of his frustration regarding toilets and inadequate plumbing systems, forcing him to put his used bog roll in a bin beside the potty. He must have lived in the Alagados slum, easily the stinkiest place in Brazil. Later on, and due to his short stay in Brazil, which presumably turned him into an authority on everything Brazilian, he clammed up about his “moradia”.
But he must have also lived (in the past !) in the UK...where else would have earned the 'sobriquet' of 'local idiot' or 'Master Lavatory Cleaner' in the RAF ? He even showed us his mug that he used to scoop up the poop.

But quite frankly, where Gollum hides out is irrelevant to his stupidity.
Just one more, as enough space ....his post of yesterday at about 8PM his local time = “...confirms that you 'for fill' the statistical requirement....”......'for fill' ? WTF ? plain ignorance.

    DemonTree/Jack

I'm back in Chicureo, blessed and immensely thankful to have been so highly fortunate in being enchanted by she who must be obeyed.

I very proudly accept the distinction of being a pig slopping, hen-pecked farm-boy, at heart and currently sharing a beautiful summer's afternoon living life like a gypsy with Madam Defarge.

Tonight we're having grilled asparagus, of which many spears will be wrapped with a paper thin slices of Jamón Ibérico. We're pairing it with a chilled Montes Alpha Viognier.

    Life is very good!

I completely agree about the timeline logic which squarely positions him/her/it close to GMT -3 plus or minus. Also I distinctly remember the idiot “expertly” lecturing erroneously a Brazilian about bathroom fixtures in Brazil...

But best of all, he letting it slip his location/living situation. Why does the pathetic idiot hide like a cockroach? Especially Canada.

Asparagus is highly labor intensive and profitable. My neighbor even grows a tiny portion of his crop under clay pots to achieve white asparagus which is a German tradition.

Personally I prefer the green, but I appreciate why the white is so prized. We have about 15 kilos of green, refrigerated - most standing vertical on moistened paper towels, on baking sheets. (This is the last of the harvest.)

My other favorite preparation is sautéed in garlic butter.

    Estimado THINK

With all due admiration, I'm incredibly impressed of your successful convincing sock puppet ruse ever...
...if indeed that is what you are implying...

None of us realized that our “useful idiot” might reside in Chubut...

Speaking of those National Socialist types, it's interesting the generous asparagus grower I met today is an alumnus of the exclusive Deutsche Schule in Santiago and his children study there. His tribe are founding members of the Club Manquehue and some are even directors of the Clinica Alemana. The farm has actually been documented by the Deutsche Welle.

I hate being gross in my blog, but it´s a gross thing, believe me. For some unexplained reason, Brazilian piping and sewage is not compatible with toilet paper so people never flush the toilet paper down their toilets. Instead, they provide little baskets, sometimes with lids and sometimes without, beside the toilet for the toilet paper. If you refuse to use them, as I did at first, you end up blocking their entire piping system.”

You can understand why I invested in UAV drone technology. They fly on continuous schedules and the cameras have ultra low light sensitivity.

The German embassy recommended DW to contact the Schmidt family, to tour their beautiful avocado farm in the Aconcagua valley before then touring about 90 kilometers north and document a drought stricken valley on an entirely different minor aquifer, in a region that is over-planted as well as poorly administered.

When the documentary was released world wide, the Schmidt family was completely appalled. The truth in fact is they are very nice people and treat their workers well. They qualify for TESCO NURTURE Gold certification.

Also one of our guests is coeliac and lactose intolerant which limits options - such is modern life. They did all seem to appreciate the salmon with sumac, it's not a commonly eaten spice. I really was “incredulous” of Gollum's delusions. Although it's true I know flag semaphore...

I really love the quip “a diode short of a radio set” which is hilarious.

As I mentioned, our family farm is also in the Aconcagua valley, but located further up the river, closer to San Felipe. The terrain is very similar to the larger Schmidt family's operation.

There is a serous debate about how to prepare asparagus including boiling, steaming, sautéing, grilling and baking.
Also there are purists that insist only olive oil and others smothering with sauce. I'm open to just about anything.

I have never tried sumac before, and I'm intrigued. The ginger I heartily agree with. I'm a big fan of seafood, especially salmon, but the sad crime is to overcook fish.

    Who is Gollum trying to impress with “1 × AN/APR-4, 1 × AN/APR-9, 6 × AN/APT-16, 3 × AN/ALT-7, 6 × AIRBORNE CIGAR, 1 × CARPET, 4 WINDOW” etc ?
It can be copied from the internet.
“Not much help in countering USSR nuclear aggression”....and I suppose he wants us to believe that by waving his shit-soiled toothbrush (also used to clean the toilets) at the Soviets, that he, single-handedly, deterred their nuclear aggression...get's better all the time.

Chicureo, sounds like after the Casillero de Diablo, your mind drifted back to Stephen Maturin......a familiar feeling, a moment of satisfaction and complete relaxation...

Gollum brings out his tired old quotes again. It's like conversing with a chatbot - write a certain keyword and get a vaguely related quote back. Most chatbots have better English, though. And you'd think if he'd really lived in Brazil he'd speak at least a little of the language, but no.

Flag semaphore doesn't sound amazingly useful. Did you ever need to use it to communicate while you were in the navy?

It's weird seeing the green trees on such dry-looking soil. Probably just means the irrigation is efficient. Was your family's original farm in the same area?

Sumac has kind of a lemony flavour so it pairs well with fish, plus an attractive dark red colour. I got the recipe off the internet, I like experimenting but usually try to stick to simpler stuff - the cost-benefit ratio is higher and often the simple things are best anyway. My partner likes making traditional British food such as toad in the hole and shepherd's pie, which I used to not be keen on when I was younger but it's grown on me.

I think I may have eaten lemon pepper on ready-made stuff, but never used it myself. I did try making French onion soup after enjoying it on the last skiing holiday, it turned out well but took a long time. We're going back to the same resort soon so I'm planning to have it again one evening. :)

Pleased to see your appreciation of [Patrick O'Brian] Stephen Maturin's prose. Yesterday's summer sunset with a glass of wine did vividly reminded the ”...extraordinary purity, from a red almost too deep to be seen through all the others to the ultimate violet and back again.”

Every sailor is instructed in flag semaphore and despite the primitive method, it still is an effective alternative. World wide the system remains used today. Satellite communication however is the primary method of data communications and more...

Drip irrigation is why the arid rocky desert hillsides are so beautifully green. (It roughly costs about USD40K per hectare to plant an orchard. That does not include the cost of purchasing the land or water.)

Our original family farm is situated in the valley floor, about 10 km away from our avocado orchards. As I mentioned a long time ago, approximately 80% of our property was expropriated during the early 70s. In the mid-70s my father and uncle had the foresight to acquire the steep side property and purchase water rights.

In a nutshell: What remained of the original farm, which originally produced corn/wheat/alfalfa; they mostly planted vineyards, which is unsuitable for avocados. (Cool air always flows downward and settles on the valley floor.)

You really have me curious about sumac, especially because Madam Defarge has never heard of it either and does not remember seeing it in the supermarket. We originally used Lawry's brand lemon pepper - especially on poultry and seafood with great success, but you can make an excellent more economical alternative at home.

Re semaphore, guess you need a backup when technology fails. Makes me wonder how young people brought up with GPS and satnav will cope if they ever have to navigate the old fashioned way.

USD40k is a lot! I'm pretty sure farmers here don't pay anything close to that to plant an apple orchard, and the water falls out of the sky for free (mostly). Aren't there crops you could grow that are better suited to the dry local conditions? Re your old farm, what happened to all the land that was expropriated? Is it still owned by smallholders? Sold to agribusiness?  Or did the original owners get it back later?

Sumac is mostly used in Middle Eastern cuisine, and sometimes we have to get it from the foreign food aisle instead of the normal spice section. The lemon pepper looks surprisingly simple, maybe we'll try it sometime.

If you remember, I mentioned a long time ago that celestial navigation is no longer necessary, but it's a viable alternative when you need it. Same with using flags and lamps to communicate. The old signal lamp for sending Morse code messages has been greatly modernized:

    https://newatlas.com/us-navy-signal-lamps-fltc-texting/50523/

Did you ever see the movie: The Hunt for Red October? The Americans and Russians communicated by sonar pings and periscope telegraphy.

Anyway, my work was basically a desk assignment.

As the old farmland, a few hectares were eventually purchased, but the vast part of the farmland was re-subdivided and planted with orchards, vineyards and pasture. Most of the small holders no longer own their properties. Recently, a small 12 hectare former part of our old farm (with water rights) sold for approximately USD940k.

Farming is a risky and expensive proposition, requiring knowledge, skill and luck.

The rocky arid hillsides, originally utilized for goat grazing, could be used for vineyards and we first did initially plant a small portion in table grapes, but the the profitability was marginal.

Try roasted chicken our baked salmon with lemon pepper, applied before cooking. It not however is an alternative to fresh lemon.

Been accompanying yr comments on semaphore / morse code....as a young kid (11-16) I was a scout, and learned both....Learned 'n passed the semaphore test early on - enjoyed waving the flags around, 'and we were tested for speed 'n accuracy - but the morse code badge - needed to become a 1st class scout - was a different cup of tea.

Do I ski ? Used to, but water skiing - at the SPYC (São Paulo Yacht Club) on the Guarapiranga reservoir....had friends who had speed boats with powerful outboard engines....relatively easy to get the hang of, a lot of fun, but if you weren't in shape could make your legs sore.
You're right about Don Maximiano....Heaven....but here, USD 150...only for very special occasions

    Gollum,
Your idea of proof never ceases to amuse me....
I was curious to see who your “4 independent witnesses” were, but my suspicions were soon confirmed....anyhow, let's see who your 'star' witnesses are...

#1, a Canadian who laments the absence of mini-showers to wash his 'tushy'....which means he, and you, must have a smelly ass, and undies full of skid-marks.
#2, a guy worried about electric showers... full of wires and melting cables....true in many cases, but I've mostly lived in houses with hot water boilers and/or gas heated showers...he does admit it was/is more common outside the main cities, so presume his experience was acquired in some very old houses. Fresh out of College, I rented a small falt, 'n the shower was electric ...worked well, no shocks.
#3, had a problem with flush buttons....years ago the 'Hydra' brand valve was very common in good houses and flushed away practically anything...and the 2 flush button system is already quite common here (to save water).
#4, admits his report on 'where to put the paper' might not be entirely accurate or complete....says it all.
Only their opinions in specific cases, and hardly proof of anything

Sorry to inform you Burraldo, but your witnesses have proved zilch, or “nada”.

I too earned my scouting badges, that importantly prepared me for the navy as well as life in general.

Don Maximiano is also pricey here as well, but if you buy it by the case and have a discount, it's justifiable to pull a cork and savor it on a beautiful evening.

I've never seen The Hunt for Red October, maybe I should. I forgot you wouldn't have been out on ships, but I bet semaphore isn't much used anyway.

Looking up prices of agricultural land in the UK, that 12 hectares would cost less than half as much here (unless it had hope of planning permission). Is that due to the water rights or is land just much more valuable/profitable in Chile?

“I rented a small falt” don't care what you opine it is of no consequence. So you cannot produce one independent witness
There is absolutely nothing to verify your claim. You should give up lying as I expose each, and every cheat you attempt.

The 360° tour or Errazuriz is damned interesting....the landscape is quite impressive. How far from Santiago ?

    DT
The reservoir is enormous, and you could ski in a straight line for miles, but my friends liked to screw with me and turn the boat sharply, trying to spin you out in a large and very fast circle....had to be aware of these manoeuvres and cut inside when they turned sharply.
Just some info on the reservoir...Construction started in 1906, by the“ São Paulo Tramway Light and Power Co”, and inaugurated in 1908. Its primary objective was to provide the needs of a hydroelectric power plant (Parnaíba). About 20 years later, as São Paulo grew, it became a supply of drinking water, and still is. The SPYC was inaugurated in 1912, and was the first yacht club built in the region.

Highly impressed you were a Sea Scout.

The movie is dated, but good. Sean Connery portrayed the Russian commander of the Red October.

The modernized system is used more than you would think. The Soviets brilliantly first developed a laser communications alternative for the lamp semaphore. (Those devices transmit an enormous amount of data in micro bursts, point to point.)

Besides lengthy sailing on the four-masted Esmeralda, I did do some minor perfunctory service aboard vessels but you're correct.

Agricultural land in Chile is highly valued and prized. My family has never sold any land we we've owned and comparable land in California is actually valued less.

    Jack

It's beautiful and less than a two hour drive from Santiago. I can drive from Chicureo to the farm in an hour and 30 minutes, also (traffic permitting) drive from Viña to the farm in less than 2 hours.

I've been out on the lake by Petrolina, which I believe is the largest man-made on our continent. Your countrymen scare me with their high speed boats after consuming liters of beer.

Sounds fun. There's a large reservoir near me called Rutland water where they do water sports, not sure if that includes water skiing. It was only built in the 70s and they drowned two villages in the process. I've cycled round it a few times, it's a nice day out with several pubs to stop at on the way.

    Chicureo
Sea Scouts wasn't very impressive, we hardly ever did anything. Eventually I got bored and quit. Never learned any semaphore either, although I did memorise about half the morse alphabet and learned a few knots.

Why do navies still train recruits on sailing ships? Aren't the skills a bit irrelevant nowadays? Anyway, I wish I hadn't googled the Esmeralda. Chile has some very dark history.

Sad you had a disappointing experience in the Sea Scouts.

I thought you already knew about the sad events...

What occurred on the Esmeralda is why I've repeatedly mentioned why I despised Admiral José Toribio Merino.

Training on sailing ships is an excellent way of creating officer morale and the lessons we learned were invaluable. The vessel has an unfortunate history, but I loved sailing aboard.

I tried to enthuse my bride in amateur sailing as recreation, but she terribly suffered from sea sickness. It was fortunate, because the sport is expensive and time consuming.
