Falklands exempt from UK requirements for pre departure coronavirus testing
The Falkland Islands has been exempted from new UK regulations regarding pre-departure Covid-19 testing for international travelers to England. The new testing requirements, announced by UK Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps, will be in force from 4 am on January 15. Read full article

Although I completely support the new vaccines, there are cases that the vaccinations have proven to be deadly to segments of our aged population. (Norway as an example.)

We're too busy harvesting and packing green seedless table grapes (Sugraone) — which gives me little time for watching what perhaps will become President of the USA in perhaps 2 years.
The export market is exceptionally good this season.
Stay well and hopefully you'll see that this pandemic panic frenzy has been terribly managed.

A large percentage of “Florida orange” juice is from Brazil is generally from the Valencia variety.
We agree about what commercial OJ tastes like.
Our government has taken severe lockdown measures trying to control the virus, but it's become counteractive to the economy.
As I've said before, the lockdown policy is lunacy.
Reasonable caution, careful hygiene and certainly the vaccines are all important to achieve a heard immunity.
The pandemic dust and feathers are just an example of bureaucratic ineptitude.

Well, we are now 3 weeks + into another lockdown and infection rates are now levelling off, with more deaths than in the first wave.
These new variants have changed the game here, what worked before doesn’t work now.
Unfortunately the same is already happening in other parts of the world, this next phase is almost certainly going to be worse, if not much worse, than the last.
On the up side vaccinations are going well, 3.5 million so far, the plan is for all health/care workers and vulnerable persons (some 14 million) to be done by mid feb, the rest of us by sept, approx.
Well, those that want the jab anyway, as for those who don’t they will just have to take their Darwinian chances.
Meanwhile back in the EU they have now at least started vaxing people, except their approved vax has gone short supply, Manchester has vaccinated more people than France.

Good to see you're doing well. It seems this pandemic scenario will continue to complicate world affairs for the next few months. Despite the fact that there have been a few unfortunate instances of death with the aged reacting adversely to inoculation (primarily due to weak immune viability) we are encouraging everyone to be vaccinated when it becomes available.
Saying that, everyone in our family has been unaffected and the national mortality statistics have not shown the high levels reported in Europe.
As I've mentioned, we're working full-time harvesting our table grapes of which about 20-25% will be exported to Tesco. (We are very fortunate to have TESCO NURTURE certification.)
This activity coincides with the current harvest of our Hass variety avocados — which almost is all at the moment destined to the North American market via the port area of Philadelphia. The demand and market for grapes and avocados this season is outstanding.
Even Madame has decamped for the harvest to the farm and we are extremely satisfied with the quality as well as the yields. Hiring experienced seasonal labor has been exceptionally easy as the valley unemployment still remains high.

Closing down outdoor activities – such as going to the beach or the ski resorts was absolute lunacy because UV radiation kills the airborne virus.
The very attractive and capable Venezulana of our permanent staff now has four other ladies whose sole responsibility is to comply with the health authorities regulations.
We are using facial ID linked to each daily employee temperature checks and we've rearranged distances of the box packing positions. (We’re staying two steps ahead of the health inspectors.)
Its very interesting to note that despite having a large employee celebration for Independence Day and even a larger one for our Christmas party – we’ve had no outbreak of COVID infection.
We've insisted on frequent hand washing with soap — but have not required mask wearing. (They all have masks and know to have them on when we have visitors.)
This evening's fare is simply a charcuterie of cheese, pistachios, olives, Iberian ham and garlic sourdough bread accompanied with a bottle of ancient '89 Merlot that we pulled the cork last night.

Speaking of FACSIST cuisine — what really is counterevolutionary — I forgot to mention Madame’s lemon pistachio pesto on this evening's charcuterie platter. Simply, basil, roasted salted pistachios, parmesan cheese, garlic and olive oil. (This was a new recipe, which we really enjoyed.)
Why pistachios? Pine nuts have a much milder flavor. These pistachios stand out and add more depth to create a rich pesto — which I highly recommend.
Probably offensive in Liguria – but the Italians are so particular and it could perhaps cause a government overthrow.

Truly gives you a perspective of how narrow our country really is.
The lack of Summer rain and warm temperatures are balanced with cool Pacific coastal breezes in the evenings and the snowmelt from the glorious Andes makes the central area of Chile a growers paradise!
I should correct some misunderstandings:
1. Obviously the pesto is with a splash of lemon juice.
2. I reserve Baileys coffee for skiing holidays and the Christmas holidays.
3. Unlike the paranoid delusional subterranean drunkard– I rarely imbibe the hard stuff.
4. Moderate consumption of wine has been shown to be highly beneficial to ones health.
Today's grape packing will be the largest so far of the season. The logistics alone of precooling and cold storage management is challenging.
Weather is absolutely perfect — clear blue sky, a comfortable warm temperature and low humidity results ideally for the grape harvest.

I first learned to ski upon the base of Aconcagua from my father and until this last season — had annually enjoyed the Portillo ski resort since I learned to walk. (It is also where ma mariée enchantresse won a giant slalom championship in her youth.)
Today’s dejeuner is a simple but delicious Catalan tortilla de patatas (Spanish omelette ) and a cherry tomato salad. Madame currently has me addicted to icecold Canada Dry Ginger Ale light.
One of the great advantages of thick adobe walls and tile roofs is the farmhouse remains pleasantly cool in the Summer.
Wintering in England I would imagine to be pleasant and accepted as the natural rhythm of seasons — but in the frigid Canadian great white north it is intensely miserable. (Their Summers are also hellish with high humidity and blood sucking mosquitos – the size of small helicopters.)

Nothing is more satisfying by providing needed employment, generating what we expect profitable net income and contributing healthy delicious superfood to people during their Winter. (As an added benefit, our avocado forests absorb tons of carbon dioxide and emit huge amounts of oxygen into the world’s atmosphere.)
On a personal note, we harvested today a few of our very first test Chilean developed domestic variety which we’re very encouraged.
“Maylen is a natural-looking bluish-black seedless grape, with an excellent intense classic flavor, and improved post-harvest properties that allow it to be shipped to distant markets after prolonged storage, in excellent condition.”
The new variety has an outstanding flavor and post-harvest characteristics. It is a black grape, harvested in mid to late season with an excellent taste, very green stalk, healthy fruit and plants with a storage period of up to 90 days.
We’ll harvest all the variety by mid-February, but today’s brix was averaging 17⁰ and had full purple color.
(The word “Maylen” (or “Maylén”) is a word from the indigenous Mapuche language and means ‘Princess: a powerful, noble and intelligent woman.’)

Last night in bed we felt as the earthquake measuring a 6.4 on the other side of the Andes in Pocito Argentina — our close friend and fellow ski enthusiast lives close by in San Juan. He and his family are fine — but Mother Nature can truly be a vengeful bitch when she wants to…
The summer mornings always have a special light and unique smell. The field crews have been harvesting since the dawn and already many of the pick crates have been sent to be gassed with sulfur dioxide and then set aside in the packing shed — waiting for the packing crews that arrive at 10:30. After being carefully sorted and packed for export — they’ll be sent for rapid precooling and then stored in coldstorage.
The ongoing avocado harvesting is a completely different story as although we do control our harvest — but have outsourced the packing/refrigeration with a large exporting firm — although we still retain marketing destinations.
As about all fruit we market – it's on a risky free consignment basis. ( It also can produce the highest net returns if the marketing is from a reputable receiver.)
The logistical complexity of operations is horrendously expensive with enormous costs for materials, labor, electricity, cold storage, trucking, seafreight and a whole other number of expenses. We’ll eventually recover our cost outlays no earlier than September with final liquidations sometime in November.
That of course IF there are no serious problems during the marketing...
The largest wholesale produce distribution market in New York City has been on strike for the past three days.
The fruit export business is just like going to a gambling casino — except the odds are typically more against the grower.

During Chile’s 2010 8.8 excitement — (besides all the other damages) our port operations were crippled in the middle of our critical export season. (We ourselves had to load vessels in Coquimbo.)

Actually the South American bog perversion became part of my reality during the farmhouse renovation — with me left with a single odorus port-a-potty for several weeks.
Although I should be extremely sensitive of all the terrible consequences of COVID19 — I personally discover all the positive effects of the pandemic.
Marriage has certainly become more pleasant!
During our looong marriage union — disunion has always been occasionally considered and certainly the woman has earned her title of Madame Defarge.
Our oldest daughter gave her the title as homage to Charles Dickens. (If you remember, Madame was the ringleader of the tricoteuses, a zealous fanatic for the French Revolution with her apparent passivity belies a relentless thirst for vengeance.)
As a fan of Rumpole — I had earlier named her: “She who must be obeyed” — but our children enthusiastically embraced “Madame” due to her volatile character.
Although she and I were very angry with each other on the change of our pied-a-terre to a new apartment in Viña — and angrier again when she insisted we seize the opportunity to aquire/steal the other apartment in Viña and the other in Valle Nevado — she’s been docile and very pleasant to live with.
Normally you would expect we would divorce alone about the ski getaway remodel — but instead we enjoyed the experience.
Circumstances and opportunity then encouraged us together to remodel the farmhouse and barn.
Today’s dejeuner was simply a marvelous medium-rare sirloin steak sandwich with carmelized sweet red onions on sourdough. (I’ve been snacking on grapes all day.)
Since there has been recent intense scrutiny of my alcoholic consumption, I should note my lunch on beverage was an ice cold Kunstmann Toronayo pale ale 5⁰ bottled in Valdivia Región de los Rios.

As I earlier mentioned, I have a good friend that lives in San Juan Argentina. He’s a retired officer of the Argentine Navy and our families have enjoyed skiing together in the Argentina’s ski resort — Las Leñas.
We had an enjoyable long conversation today —with him describing the actual disaster in his country — which was NOT the recent strong earthquake — but sadly instead the Argentine economy.
According to my friend — only fools with government backing are currently investing capital into new developments there. He further told me that official unemployment statistics were smoke and mirrors — just as we’ve seen here in Chile as well.
He’s a typical Argentine — fully patriotic and yet bitterly complaining about his country — but he marvelously outwits the tax authorities because it’s a national sport.
He taught me why and how — skiing in style in Argentina was far more cheaper than Chile.
Obviously we will no longer ski there — but it was a marvelous period of recreation for my entire family. The superb cuisine and outstanding Malbec vintages with exemplary service will all be fondly remembered.

Personally I had very successful day — despite losing electrical power and having to transfer one of our backup generators for our pumps to the packing shed. Things are humming right along.
I pulled a cork of a velvety smooth Viña Carmen '04 Carménère and have made a serious dent in the bottle with my youngest daughter participating.
As she’s far busier than myself — I prepared for us a cold thinly sliced sirloin steak salad (made from part of today’s lunch) baby romaine, cherry tomato, avocado, sweet red onion, pimento goat cheese, paper thin sliced french radishes, lightly dressed with aioli, sprinkled with roasted pistachios and garlic sourdough croutons.
It was delicious!

Again another glorious beautiful day as I was up well before the dawn rose above the Andes range with an expresso — before taking a tour of the vineyard harvest. Our summer mornings always have a sense of excitement with a large new number of issues to resolve.
.Although we’re maintaining our backup generator — despite now we’re now fully restored back to the main power grid with our grape packing shed.
We expect to almost finish our avocado harvest by the end of this month and expecting to exploit an excellent marketing window in North America.

I had a chance later to swing by the farmhouse to welcome our two grandchildren and my oldest daughter with Madame.
The children are delightful and the women of our family are planning several fun farm activities.
Besides the vegetable garden and the pottery workshop along with kitchen activities — there will be other things that will easily keep them occupied.
For example — I have here, the astronomical telescope ma mariée gave to me when I was a newly commissioned ensign — that I plan to share with our grandchildren. Also, taking them on motorcycle piggyback-rides are planned.

As I’ve said before — we are indentured customers/distributers of one of Madame’s school friends — producing a wide selection of ‘gourmet’ goat cheeses.
Some of the cheeses are really quite good — including the pimento and smoked selections that are wrapped with grape leaves — but in truth I prefer the bovine varieties.
The small niche (near-insolvent) company/hobby also harvests and markets the Alba variety truffles from the Chillán area — where they farm apples, blueberries and kiwi. (They ship us on a biweekly basis a wide array of items which obligate us as hostages.)
Even their butchered lamb is shipped to us which is excellent quality.
Tonight my charcuterie board will be invariably loaded with fromage de chèvre and therefore I’m obliged to use Carménère to overcome the cholesterol.
Yes, I’m hitched to the chaffing hardwood yoke but I do enjoy those perfumed bedsheets that the inebriated TERESA who’s insanely envious...

Greatly satisfied with what I saw — returned to the farmhouse to the smell of pain aux raisin — warm from the oven and sat with the animated children as well as the female household with a creamy café au laite enjoying the patisserie.
Our grandchildren also today have a busy agenda of gardening, pottery crafts and leaning how to dry Flame Seedless for raisins.

Today is absolutely marvelous and really am pleased just how this moment in time has become my favorite harvest period in memory.

Unlike the bitterly frigid inhospitable Canadian Winter — the warm dry Summer weather here is glorious.

Besides having a great harvest with exceptionally good quality this season — it’s very clear that the avocado and table grape yields are far more than even our most optimistic estimates. (Avocado maturity and quality is measured in oil content and ours is ultra premium — which will command a high profitable return.)
Madame and our daughter returned with a bag of a new delicious variety of nectarines that is good we plan to graft (with permission) a branch on to one of our trees.
The equestrian adventure today was successful and the children were completely exhausted and will soon retire to their beds early.
We’ve finished early for Friday and getting ready for this evening’s grilled sirloin steak (bife de chorizo) dinner for our guest — who is clearly a true gourmet and oenophile.
Although we’ll open two outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons — one of the bottles is from the last century that my late father stored it himself in our cellar over 40 years ago.

My daughter and her boyfriend have been out on our motorcycles in the orchard hillsides and vineyards below. They’re obviously having a fun time!
All the meat for the asado has been placed on a table in the entry hall — carefully wrapped in paper as they need to be at ambient temperature for today’s early asado. (Beef, pork sausage and even chicken breasts along with ears of sweetcorn, sweet red onions and asparagus to grill.)
My son-in-law will have everything ready for preparing including the grapewood transforming into perfectly hot coals as the farmhouse gardener will be assisting.
Some of the salads are already being prepared and the fruit salad was made early this morning after breakfast.

The grandchildren were thrilled to see their father arrive and he’s currently busy with the complex asado along with our daughter’s boyfriend. The smell of roasting meat is a sublime concoction of a nostalgic grapewood fire — savory wafts of sizzling proteins and lipids, and the wisp of aromatic herbs and spices that create an amalgam of pure olfactory heaven. Truly the serene aroma, mixed with carnivorous desire.

No offense intended to the really absolutely delicious selections in the UK, Brazil, Argentina or even Italy which I had the luxury of trying them all — especially Aberdeen Angus from Scotland — but I thought you’d all enjoy what we enjoy in Chile. (Prices can be converted to USDollars at a 720 to $1)
Also, I should note that Chile imports cheaper priced beef from Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil — but they are not the same prime quality.
My very cordial son-in-law plans to return to work on Monday and I’m so pleased with him joining the family this weekend.
(As I’ve mentioned — tomorrow we’ll roast two small delicious baby pigs which we really enjoy and our carnivorous grandchildren are facinated with.)

In search of complicating our lives — we became know as gypsys because we were constantly moving from our old apartment in Viña to the dilapidated farmhouse in Panquehue and then to Madame’s dream home in Chicureo.
Our children became routine to the constant restless travel between our homes.
Over the past 20 months we’ve vastly improved our gypsy encampments to four distinct and very pleasant locations — but ma mariée and I now feel Panquehue is now our favorite!
We’ve found ourselves enamored with the charming and indelible parade of country life. From our garden, you can admire the majestic Andes that has blessed our dry Aconcagua Valley with abundant water for irrigation.
The electrical grid in our valley is straining at the tremendously large demand due to the irrigation pumps and numerous coldstorages drawing immense megawatts of energy.
We’ve been in the process of applying for a European Union subsidy through the Rabobank — which seems very promising to be approved. (We also will receive preferred access to supermarket approval for preference.)
Unlike our pleasant Summer weather — I understand Canada is experiencing a brutally frigid Winter.
