Based on what?

Britain did not expel the Argentine population in 1833. They merely reasserted sovereignty. The only group Britain did expel was a 26-man Argentine garrison that had already made plans to leave the islands.

It is a tragic fact that many South American countries “support the Argentine claim”, even if it it often is just lip service. I wonder what they get in return from Argentina. It must be something. Most countries in the world are silent or “neutral”, or are talking about “dialogue” (even if they must understand that such a dialogue is meaningless given the “Transitional provisions” in the Argentine Constitution). Would be very nice to hear a government (other the UK's) or an international organisation standing up for the “kelpers”.

What everyone needs to keep in mind — we in Chile are unfortunately neighbors with charming kleptomaniacs with attitude tendencies that defy common sense.

But it’s not their territory, nor their rightful possession — Argentina’s needs the Malvinas claim to cover up and distract from their government's proclivity to over-borrow, over-spend, and then act like bewildered victims of some complex plot has nothing to do with the economic theory.

All the austerity in the world is not going to magically transform Argentines into logical decision makers — but they can still claim that the UK is somehow the root of their woes.

The Argentine public mentality is bewilderingly capable of holding multiple opposing and incompatible ideas in their heads, and simultaneously believing the Falklanders are the scapegoat to their disaster.

Meanwhile, we agree and sign meaningless accords because we don't need their childish scorn. (Which in the past — they repeatedly caused us suffering.)

Brunei and Belize have significantly higher populations than the Falklands, with a population of ~3000 you can’t expect them to create a police force let alone a defence army, right now they are self-governing, there’s no need for them to be independent as what good would that do?

U.K. is part of NATO so automatically defence is 100x better for them

Chile’s support of Argentina is much the same as my support for Arsenal FC. I am not a member, I’ve never bought any of their official merchandise (only rip-offs from Bangkok) and never paid to go to a match. But I tell everyone I support Arsenal. I love them but I’ve never done anything to further their cause. You could say I only pay them lip service.

@zaczac, we will have to agree to disagree, being recognized by the UN as a sovereign country is a big deal and gets the benefits that come with it, also population size is irrelevant, there are a few countries with a population around 10.000 people and are members of the UN, they dont have to have their own military but would get support of the UN if anyone is aggressive towards them,

Today..., it is announced that there is a massive outbreak of Covid19 cases on almost all crews of all Spanish/Falklands joint venture fishing fishing vessels..., including those that had already sailed a couple of weeks ago... that are now being derouted to Brasil and Cabo Verde...
- I don't Think those Countries will be very happy for their visit...
