Watching sunset earlier in the garden and watching the beautiful rose color reflection upon the snow covered Aconcagua peak was an amazing brief flash of magnificence that we all admired.
The highest peak of the Americas is an astounding near 7,000 m (23,000 ft) and located in Argentina.
(Pugol, I thought of you at that moment.)
Although the grandchildren enjoyed the buttered sweetcorn on the cob — the adults really savored the artichokes with a creamy garlic aioli.
The carpaccio was the best in memory! Thinly sliced lean sirloin on a very thin base of German grain mustard topped with thinly slices of scallions, very thin slices of avocado, sprinkled with shavings of chèvre and drizzled with olive oil and lemon juice. (Normally we add lemon capers, but don’t have them here.)
The carpaccio was accompanied with thin garlic butter toasts and a newly opened bottle of my son’s private stock of extraordinary Caballo loco N°6.
(The little ones had never experienced carpaccio before but tried a small portion as we believe they need to adept to new food items.)
Today has been remarkably enjoyable and we’re so pleased that we extensively remodeled the farmhouse.
The kids really adore bath time in my grandmother’s enormous enameled cast iron bathtub — that was manufactured in the USA in about 1920 and re-enameled last year.
Life is sweet and truly wonderful!

Weather here is fabulous with a clear blue sky and predicted high of 25°c (77°f).
Madame baked pain au chocolat and pain aux raisins for this mornings breakfast with hot chocolate for the children and perfectly prepared café latte for the adults.
The ladies of our family are busy forming the woman’s cooperative of Panquehue and I’m taking our grandchildren on my morning tour of the vineyards and orchards.
It’s really great for us to be away from the city!
Signore THINK, the last book I mentioned from my grandfather’s library was Esteban Echeverría's ‘La Cautiva’ which is one of your country’s noble authors. I assume you are referring to perhaps Isabel Allende — which was not a part of my grandfather’s time — but we are readers of many of her captivating novels.
It’s interesting that AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine is now recommended should not be given to under-30s because of its link to potentially deadly blood clots and healthy people aged 18 to 29 be offered either Pfizer or Moderna's vaccine instead.
The vast majority of vaccine injections in Chile has been Sinovac produced in China which Madame and I have already received our first injection. (There is speculation that three injections may be necessary and we’re planing to receive the additional upcoming influenza vaccine.)
We also earlier received an up to date Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine which seems an overkill — but we’ve been enjoying a healthy lifestyle consuming avocados and participating in outdoor sports activities.
We enjoy life which is too precious to waste!

Meanwhile the gitanas of our family — were deviously occupied on a Zoom call discussing the woman’s cooperative of Panquehue project.
Estimado THINK, I missed your late comment, but obviously we read ‘La casa de los espíritus’ and frankly the plot twists were a bit too much. (The movie with Jeremy Irons was also very disappointing.)
Saying that — Madame, our daughters and myself have all enjoyed her works. Personally the ‘Hija de la fortuna’ and especially the extraordinary ‘Inés del alma mía’ I really enjoyed — because she captured an accurate historical perspective of my country’s early history
Regarding the Fundo Los Dos Jacarandaes — the two young trees are thriving and growing rapidly as the species normally do — if properly cultivated and well irrigated.
Today’s le déjeuner is delicious sirloin sandwiches (Churrasco Italiano) topped with avocado and garden tomato dressed with mayonnaise on fresh sourdough bread accompanied with cold fresh lemonade from our trees.

It would have been ideal if we had received more rain as we are threatened with another unfortunate drought cycle. At least the export markets have reflected very high returns!

Piñera’s fortune comes from investments — but more significantly from credit card company Bancard — which our 71-year-old head of state funded in 1976. In 2010, Piñera sold his 26% stake in airline LAN for US$1.5 billion. He also sold his TV channel Chilevisión to media conglomerate Time Warner for an estimated US$150 million.
A bill proposed by the political opposition in October 2020 triggered a heated debate in our overpaid Congress last week. The ridiculous bill involves a 2.5% tax on fortunes that exceed US$22 million USD — but the ruling coalition and the government threatened to refer the bill to the constitutional tribunal. (These types of taxation will ruin the financial health of our country as it has in Argentina.)

J&J/Janssen is a one-dose COVID vaccine that was 63% effective in clinical trials. Possible side effects in the arm where the shot is given include pain, redness and swelling. Other side effects in the body may include tiredness, headache, muscle pain, chills, fever and nausea.

Although we have a variety of coffee makers — which we use consistently — I’m the only person in my family that enjoys espresso black without sugar at the beginning of the day.
One of my personal luxuries is having a ridiculous five café Nespresso machines distributed at my office — Chicureo — Viña — Panquehue — Valle Nevado. (The capsule system is a wasteful extravagance — but they make a perfect cup.)
Reflecting that I was destitute with only a port-a-potty toilet facility and drinking instant Nescafé coffee in the morning — a year ago I find humor in our current situation.
Later this morning I enjoyed Madame make our coffee from freshly ground beans with a French press and expertly froth the milk for a perfect café latte.
There are freshly baked croissants (and nectarine jam aside) for this morning’s breakfast with hot chocolate for the children when they awaken.
The primary product of the ladies small business cooperative will focus on jams and jelly — with probably producing a thousand jars — of which most will be sold at a loss or given away — but it has marvelous tax benefits. (Plus it will keep them busy.)
In the news — Chile is approaching nearly 7 million vaccination with soon 4 million have received their second injection. Saying that — I still think this lockdown policy is pure madness! There are numerous studies showing the long term isolation has caused more social damage than solving the pandemic crisis.
Our youngest daughter we learned last night is back in Panguipulli with her boyfriend — they seem to be happy.

As the ladies continue in their cooperative planning — my job as babysitter is to keep them occupied most of the day — starting with another tour of the fields starting in about 15 minutes.
After our return — I have several activities to keep us busy.
Including the café Nespresso machines — we also have a ridiculous four icecream making machines. Today I’m personally making nectarine icecream with the grandchildren using Tetra Pak and our farm produced preserves. Three of the four machines is the highly recommendable Lello 4080 Musso Lussino which is the Lamborghini of icecream machines.
Yesterday we laid many of the grape pompano bunchlets of grapes we gathered on the a newspaper area of the terrace to make raisins.
That and having their participation in gardening — especially harvesting vegetables and fruit for the meals keep them occupied and happy.
It’s a wonderful method of training children to be self reliant and develop a strong work ethic mentality.
After le déjeuner — the children will be absorbed in pottery making with Madame as I’m going to visit my friends at Viña Arboleda.

Our brief morning tour was enjoyable as the children were given a demonstration of how drip irrigation works. My grandson (who’s nearly 7) was amazed how the system was easily controlled by software. (He easily understood the concept of monitoring and manipulating the irrigation using an iPad.)
I later showed them how by harvesting select seeds and planting for next season will result in a new crop for the family enjoyment. I showed then a couple of time lapse growth videos which they were fascinated. (Children need to learn that food comes from the soil and only distributed in supermarkets.)
As I mentioned — today’s le déjeuner is Pastel de Choclo which is one of my favorite countryside dishes. In fact — because of the way Madame prepares it — it is perhaps the best in Chile (although many critics would complain about the high quantity of raisins and pitted deluxe black olives) — adorned with fresh basil leaves and alongside ensalada Chilena using. The beverage of course is freshly made lemonade!
As I mentioned — dessert today is my responsibility with the children assisting — but it’s not the same as I remember using a crank hand mixer with salted ice in a wooden tub. (The flavor is Flame Kist nectarine from our garden made into jam.)

According to the Chile Avocado Association — the average retail sales price for a Chile avocado was $1.89 in January. By March 26 (the latest week of data reported) it had risen to $2.29. In NYC avocados are selling for $2.49 each. Wholesale, Bloomberg notes that the price of a 10-kilogram (22-pound) box of Hass avocados — $27.89 — is the highest amount it has ever been since prices started being documented nearly 20 years ago.
These high prices will result in far higher final sales liquidations!
As my son is arriving to join our family and this evening’s menu fare is char-grilled sirloin steak with garlic butter with Brurpee sweet corn and cherry tomato salad. (As he cellars his stock of Caballo Loco wine here — I’m looking forward of sampling whatever he selects.)

Our son arrived directly from Vitacura mentioning there were no Heath checkpoints on the highway — there was a noticeable light traffic.
When asked how long would he stay — he insisted that no later than early Monday morning as his office is buried in work.
He told me that because most of their staff was exempted from attendance — the partners and junior associates were working 16 to 18 hour days due to the increase of demand.
He also somehow was able to assemble the documents to apply for the woman’s cooperative formation and apply for special credits exclusively reserved for women small business subsidies.
As he’s been informed of this evening fare — informed him to surprise us all with what he chose in the cellar! He responded — any bottle? Which I responded why not!
I did ask we have something to toast his arrival and the coming sunset — which resulted in the ladies insisting we open a bottle of chilled champenoise...
This evening will be indeed marvelous!

(He shared with me that he thought the women of our family is completely insane with the cooperative idea — but I reminded him it would keep the busy and occupied.)
Weather is beautiful — but noticeably cooler as today’s predicted high is 23°c (74°f)
We’ve returned and are waiting for breakfast which our Schwiegertochter is making waffles for the family.
My son and I decided we have an asado — and as it’s a Saturday will have one of my favorite Viña Arboleda Carménère selections.
I realize that some unfortunate souls that do not have the fortitude to savor fine wine in moderation as a part of enjoying life.

These new variants are so much more transmissible that a harsher lockdown is needed just to contain them.

Chile has been the leader of Latin America with 7 million of 19 million total receiving their first of two injections with nearly 4 million receiving the second.
My son feels the restrictions will remain through July — and although our our children are scheduled to receive Sinovac injections as Madame and I — there is a sincere uncertainty to vaccinate the grandchildren.
(As their grandparents we think they should — but we understand it’s a parent decision.)
Our son and Schwiegertochter took the motorbikes together into the hills gave Madame and I time to supervise the grandchildren and it was remarkable watching them study online with their Deutsche Schule class studies. (Over 60% in German language, although they do study in English as well.)
The two children are becoming proficient polyglots — with a decent basic command of three languages — although Madame is trying her best to instill them in French.
(As I mentioned — I studied German as a third language in The Grange school and I had to intensely study to prepare to read a German children’s story — which required a week of practice! (The grandchildren loved how I butchered the language — but loved me for doing it.)
The really amusing aspect of the mechanical monkey clanging its tiny tin cymbals is highly predictable as long as you keep winding the machine — you can always see the predictable result of the monkey showing its ass every time!
Our modest asado today was simply sirloin steaks with fresh garden vegetables accompanied with Madam’s lemonade.

The weather today has been amazing with a clear sky although the Andes cordillera was shrouded with clouds obscuring the peaks. The temperature reached 23°c (74°f) which was perfect!
Although I’m a bit concerned that the Andes snowpack is lower than normal our son is convinced we’ll have an exceptionally wet Winter. Hopefully skiing will be great as well — which our family all enjoy.
The ladies of the farmhouse has been happily busy in the kitchen kneading sourdough and now waiting for the dough to rise. For teatime our Schwiegertochter prepared a delicious Bavarian style nectarine strudel topped with crème fraîche. Madame in turn prepared a pâte-brisée crust and baked her signature quiche Lorraine which our son has adored since childhood.

As to vaccinating the Enkelkinder (Jikoki), at this point I would venture that there is very little data on children and any vaccines, as they are at very low risk of serious illness.
Learning another language is always useful, if only that it is easier then to learn a third language, particularly if the languages are related, I’m told, I do not know, it is similar to musical instruments, learn to play a violin and a double bass follows on.
As to which language, well what is useful, English, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Urdu/Hindi and Arabic. After that it’s a local language.
Although French is of course is still very, very, very important (you did say Madame has a 9mm), indeed my brother has lived in France for many years now, his children (grown up now with children of their own) speak French fluently and English with a French accent, we shall see about the Jikoki.
It seems in French there is no sq sound, so apart from Pink Panther quotes telling the children that, “ the phonnne is ringginng” and “is this your monkay”, I often said “the Squires squirrels are in the square”.
My now grown up niece recently told me that every time she hears the word squirrel, she remembers me, she still can’t say it properly and has been living in England for the last 5 years.
German is useful in business amongst Germans, more than anybody they are fond of going off into German in mixed company, don’t let them know you know any German, remember Enigma.

You of course know the back story of English and French in our family. Three generations of my family studied at the Grange British school and English was always spoken in our home — although Spanish was as well.
Madame’s family emigrated from France as the Spanish Civil War diaspora that originated in Catalonia. She was the second generation to study at the Lycée Français Antoine-de-Saint-Exupéry de Santiago and fiercely proud of that.
When I was a young lad choosing a third language to study — my beloved father suggested German because it was the language of engineers and was hoping to focus away my thoughts of studying English poetry.
I struggled through the classes in German but fate indeed had a special vocational path far different from what anyone could have imagined. My proficiency of English and the upcoming threat of war with Argentina — Chile became hyper-focused on our special relationship with the UK.
Chilean Germans are a tightly united social group here with their own schools, country club and maintain traditions from the 19th century. My son fell in love with one of those beautiful Fräulein and we are so deeply blessed to have her as our third daughter. My son has really done well for himself!
Despite her gentile polite demeanor — she’s fiercely loyal to tradition and son after she became pregnant — insisted their children be educated in the Deutsche Schule.
Our son is like myself — we admire (and fear) strong willed women.
Also, the third daughter is a marvelous snow skier — which is our favorite family pastime.

As a third generation Sundowner we have little in the way of such traditions, not having been educated on the same continent even.
My father was born and grew up in India, till he was 16 and joined the RAF just in time to go to war. He could speak Tamil fluently and reasonable Urdu, he was also able to learn a language (at basic level, for everyday use) in about three months, which I saw him do with both Arabic and then Greek Cypriot.
My first language was Hausa, although I would struggle to speak it now, my mother tongue English, although Dear Mama (who was from middle England) learned W. African Pidgeon English quite well, she never learned more than a few word in Hausa. Farther spoke Hausa well, Ibo fluently and some Yoruba.
My son’s mother is of Polish family, so my son grew up with mostly English however his Babcia, who he saw a lot of, only spoke Polish to him, so he has a good understanding of his heritage there, but the only Hausa words of he knows are Kakan and Kada.
I don’t see much of this being passed on to the Grandson though, maybe some Polish, although he does call me Kakan and when he is old enough I will teach him how to shoot, as I taught my son, as my Farther taught me.
Remembering your words about your wine cellar and library, for us “home” is a state of mind rather than of geography.

We both seem to admire our father’s resilience to adept to changing situations. Yours was able to cope with his geographical change of complications — my father by his ability to withstand the enormous political and societal change on the same plot of soil. Resilience is a noble characteristic of a true gentleman and if we are fortunate to acquire it — the appreciation life becomes all important.
My father recovered from financial ruin due to Marxist ideology — my education was funded by Argentina’s lust.
The Chilean word for a mongrel dog is kiltro — which (with respect) aptly define our families. Obviously fate and serendipity has also been an enormous influence upon our legacy.
As today will be warm — we’re having California style grillen chicken breast and avocado Cobb salad that includes freshly cut baby romane lettuce, garden cherry tomatoes, crumbled bacon, pitted black olives, sourdough garlic croutons, dressed with honey Dijon vinaigrette for a le déjeuner at our garden terrace.

I faintly remember as a very young boy being a part of the cheering crowd at the Prince of Wales country club (that adjoins the Grange School campus) watching with avid curiosity — the Queen plant a tree at the club and how my mother in later years ‘name-drop’ to other ladies how she thought Prince Phillip was so charming.
We had a beautiful home in the Santiago neighborhood of the club which is named La Reina (translating the Queen) and for years I foolishly thought it was named after Elizabeth II. (As I mentioned many of my ancestors were Gaelic that settled into Valparaiso.
My great-grandfather (of colonial Spanish ancestry) basically gifted his son-in-law (my paternal grandfather) a large piece of land in the Aconcagua Valley which was a generous income source for my family until the Marxist agrarian reform of the Allende administration.
Madame’s roots are Catalan as well as Occitan and her middle class family were founding members of the Club de Golf Sport Francés in 1957.
So you can imagine all the hell and angry consternation that erupted in her respected family when it was revealed their 17year old princess was pregnant and the offending young naval officer was certainly not a gentleman!
Somehow — although many times we came close to divorce — we’ve stayed married and now are enjoying 2 of our 4 our grandchildren here with us at the farmhouse.
