I totally agree with what Terence said. Petrobras was never more valuable than under the Lula government and the pre-salt discoveries. The same with Odebrecht. You should see how corrupts are Siemmens, General Electric, HP, Alstom, etc. There is no news that their respectives governments protect them. It is no excuse however, to corrupt governments officials in order to gain contracts. They should be investigated for corruption scandals, as all the corporations in the same sector. But not under a political fight, but as a transparency policy.

Due to very good market demand — we have avocados in transit to both the ports of Rotterdam and Philadelphia. Current markets are excellent as demand is remarkable!
(Fortunately we pre-committed to what is today very sought after ocean container space. Our costs were significantly higher than last season — but still cheaper than current new rates!)
Also our table grape vineyards have budded beautifully and I await for the all important flowering of the vines next month.
The private family garden is rapidly growing and we’ve been feasting on a remarkable yield of asparagus — which most the plants are over five seasons old.
Our planned evening’s fare will include cold asparagus dressed with Balsamic on a charcuterie platter of smoked ham, chèvre, pâté, dried nectarines, olives, honey roasted pistachios with Madame’s marvelous sourdough with cubes of Emmental cheese and sliced black olives baked in the bread. (I still have to go down into the cellar to choose a red to pull he cork from.)

We’ve also expanded the variety of peppers — both hot and sweet. The major increase however is several time-staged plantings multiple varieties of sweet corn.
For our family gardening is more than an outdoor activity — it's a joyful celebration of growing produce from new and treasured heirloom plants that has shaped our passion — even enjoyed by our small grandchildren.
Now with the Woman’s Cooperative of Panquehue legally domiciled in our old barn — we have a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the bounty of our gardens, orchards and vineyards subsidized with tax advantages.

Personally — I just have to share my marvelous Sunday as most our guests have now departed the farmhouse. The weather was glorious and the outdoor grape trellised patio was ideal for dining al fresco. Perhaps we spend too much at the table in family conversation as is a Chilean custom — but we did play a few spirited games of Bocceball and our son presented his plan to construct a concrete smokehouse on a hillside area of the farm. (Heavy steel doors however due to potential pilferage.)
The mixed Paella Catalan was obviously the main course — but today began with an early breakfast slowly transforming into our family favorite hors-d'œuvres, with a variety of salads and after a break having a proper “once” (What we call tea or elevenses in Chile) with some really delicious German kuchens.
As this is Madame’s last weekend before she travels south to her girlfriend’s farm — we really did it with full style. (Our older daughter surprised us with imported California Sweet Scarlett variety grapes* that were excellent!)
With luck permitting — we will begin the harvest of our vineyards in February with Flame Seedless variety grapes.

We enjoyed delicious asparagus cheese omelettes and cafè lattes before she departed.
I’m personally looking forward to the peaceful quiet and time to enjoy my grandfather’s library. There are so many literary treasures yet to be discovered.
Yesterday one of the side-dishes was gambas al ajillo (large prawns with garlic pepper olive oil) which I plan to use to make into sandwich with avocado and sliced tomato on a sourdough baguette. (The pepper oil will make a perfect dressing!)
This evening I plan to dine simply on grilled Weisswurst and German potato salad with the opened Carménère from yesterday to savor with ‘The Jungle’ by Upton Sinclair printed in 1906. (I always seen references to the work — but now I’ll read it.)

The sourdough baguette was perfect for holding the sliced tomato, rich avocado and the cold prawns with the garlic pepper oil dressing. (I also added a leaf of crisp lettuce and a spicy hot Italian pepper.)
Although it was the first time utilizing the gambas al ajillo as a sandwich ingredient — the result was marvelous!
Other than monitoring the continuing harvest — I’m pleased to report that vessel logistics into both the ports of Philadelphia and Rotterdam are without delay — which is not the same for USA west coast ports that are facing a tremendous backlog.
Current markets for Hass variety avocados reman as remarkably high as last season — which is highly gratifying. Lets hope the table grape markets also reflect similar demand and prices!

I then toured the vineyards and was greatly satisfied with the abundant leaf foliage — that we expect to remove about 35% of the tiny bunches to improve the final crop quality.
Over the past weekend the ladies of our family picked a large basket-full of the young leaves to preserve in jars as we greatly enjoy Greek style dolmadakias.
Meanwhile — our youngest daughter has taken her assistant manger position with enthusiasm — including monitoring the packing house located about an hour from the farm. The owners of the packing house we used to export together — but now they only provide services as I’m not a fan of exporting to China which is their largest customer. We’re the ideal size and produce high quality for a few select customers in the USA and the UK.
It’s amusing that I was dining last night with grilled Weisswurst while reading Upton Sinclair’s graphic description of the horrendous unsanitary meat packing plants over a century ago. (Obviously I was not disturbed as the Chilean/German sausage maker is of high quality — but I found it ironic.)
Today’s mid-day meal is a thick-cut smoked bacon, avocado, garden lettuce, and tomato sandwich on German rye bread accompanied with an ice-cold Kunstmann beer.
When the farm activity wanes — I plan to grill in the garden quincho a marvelous sirloin steak with garlic-butter-sautéd asparagus — while savoring a wonderful ‘98 Vina Santa Rita Merlot.
My current bachelorhood lifestyle and watching crops grow is exceptionally pleasant!
