Brazil's Army has rescheduled its usual annual drills due to the Oct. 2 presidential elections, it was announced. Maneuvers usually carried out during the last quarter of each year have been moved ahead in order to be completed before September. Read full article

    Police ensured a smooth September 7th. Bolsonaro's most passionate supporters are few, albeit loud. In any case, the Army has a constitutional duty to maintain order.

    Let's hope the military stays in their barracks and submits to the rule of law, that is, obeys duly elected civilian authority. Many of the Bolsonaro supporters I know favor a military intervention to set “things right”, but in the long run it would be a disaster for Brazil. The myriad problems of the country will not be solved at the point of a bayonet.
