Russia today considered that China has the right to respond with military maneuvers to the “provocations” taking place around Taiwan, exercises that Beijing successfully completed on Monday.

“In a very short period of time, we have witnessed many actions that were provocative towards the People's Republic of China,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in his daily telephone press conference.

“And, of course, China has the sovereign right to respond to these provocative actions in various ways, including military exercises in strict compliance with international law,” he said.

The spokesman emphasized that “everyone must respect China's right, as well as that of other countries, to act in this way.”

China announced today that it has “successfully completed” the military maneuvers around Taiwan that began on Saturday in response to last Wednesday's meeting in California between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Beijing considers Taiwan a rebel province since the Kuomintang nationalists retreated there in 1949 after losing the civil war to the Communist army.
