Populist Bolivia running out of natural gas reserves; northern Argentina supply also threatened

Bolivian president Luis Arce, announced on September 1st. that the country’s natural gas reserves have been depleted, and exports to Argentina and Brazil will be interrupted, leaving a massive hole in the economy of the country.

Panama Canal congestion: “skipping the queue immensely costly”; east South America suffering

Vessels in queue for transit across the Panama Canal stood at 128 ships on September first, some 42% above the 90 average, but 21% below the figure a month ago. While container ships, which have fixed schedules, tend to have reserved slots, the voyage plans for the tramp trades continue to be hit hard by the ongoing congestion brought about by drought and subsequent draft and transit restrictions put in place by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP).

China's President not attending G20 Summit in New Delhi

China's President Xi Jinping Monday announced he would not be attending the Sept. 9-10 G20 Summit in New Delhi and that his country would be represented by Prime Minister Li Qiang. Xi has attended every G20 summit since coming to power except Rome in 2021 when he participated by video link.

Extratropical cyclone kills 4 in southern Brazil

At least four people were killed in Brazil's southeastern State of Rio Grande do Sul after an extratropical cyclone hit the area Monday leaving hundreds of homes without electricity, Agência Brasil reported.

The latest version of the Government of South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands Biosecurity Handbook is now available online. The Handbook details the procedures which are in place to help reduce the risk of harmful non-native species and disease entering the Territory, along with the steps in place to detect them and limit their spread should they arrive.

Peru: Shining Path attack results in 6 people killed

Four Peruvian troops and two members of the Shining Path terrorist group were killed in a gunfight in the department of Ayacucho where a law enforcement patrol was performing “territorial control actions,” it was reported from Lima by the Joint Command of the Armed Forces. Remnants of the Maoist rebel group once focused on overthrowing the government have turned to drug trafficking.
