Former Argentine President Mauricio Macri said in Brazil he supported the idea of a single currency for all Mercosur countries because if the bloc was “serious” it needed “the same rules and the same currency, like the eurozone.” Read full article
Monetary unification involves common public policies, that is, equal social rights, equal fiscal legislation, a single Central Bank, single labor legislation, equal incentives and exemptions, a common immigration policy and equal taxes.
A common currency means a single sovereignty. One government. Therefore, the political unification of our countries would be better.
I would. I would agree that all of South America was a single country! That's the dream!
Why on earth would anyone want South America to be one country Bras, different cultures, different ethnicities, different politics, it would be a nightmare followed by a disaster, Chile and Uruguay would never want to join Argentina to become one country, the dream you have is dead in the water,
Celts, Vikings, Angles, Saxons, Normans, Britons, that's what Britain was like a thousand years ago.
So, Alfred of Wessex (if I remember correctly) had a dream of unity for the entire Island. First England was united under a single crown, then came Wales, and finally in the 18th century, Scotland.
Perhaps this short story will serve as a lesson and will help us learn once and for all that humanity is made of dreams.
Problem is Bras, that is a fantasy not a dream. it will never happen, a vast continent being compared to a small island is hardly comparable is it, France will never give up French Guiana, Suriname will never want to be controlled by Spanish speaking countries, Brasil and Argentina will never be one, nothing wrong with closer cooperation but a super state is pure fantasy, me thinks you want a Soviet Union version of South America. how did that turn out,
No chance, i dont see any other Brazilians, Argentinians, or any other people remotely interested in it, French speaking Quebec will possibly leave Canada in the future, Scotland could leave the UK, Yugoslavia split up , Czechoslovakia split up, Sudan split up, East Timor left Indonesia, the sikhs want a homeland and to quit India, Bangladesh left Pakistan, can you see a pattern Bras ? here, Belgium and Spain also have issues which could lead to separation, no one wants super states.

‘different cultures, different ethnicities, different politics’, the same can be said about the EU. Where S. America has some 5 different (main) languages and the EU has what 25?
I agree a S. American union is nothing more than a pipe dream now, but an ‘ever closer union’ project like the EU could arise in the future. If only to try and counter to economic power of blocks like the EU.
Who, it has to be said, have become very good at wielding their combined leverage to force unfair deals on lesser groupings. The EU Murcosur trade deal being an example.
Yes Czechoslovakia split up, but both the new states are EU members. Similarly with the former Yugoslav republics, all are either in the EU or waiting to join.
And certainly most if not all the separatist movements in EU countries say any new country would want to stay in the EU.
Just some thoughts.
Bras
Canada was formed by one colonial power kicking out the other and taking over is possessions. See the seven years war.
Agree to a certain extent Pughol, but Bras wants a super state ,a bit different to an economic powerful trading block, despite some claims and some politicians that want the EU to be one, it will not happen, Poland and Hungary are already railing against a lot of the policies, France will never agree to given up sovereignty to be part of a super state of Europe, Sweden. Denmark and Greece are slowly becoming less enthusiastic about it too, the EU will be around for a long time and Britain should never have left, but a European state will not happen, and may be in a generations time the UK may return, i will be long gone by then, just my opinion,
There will not be a USE with a similar structure/nature to the USA any time soon, I agree.
However further integration has to happen if the EU is to function going forward, particularly when further expansion eventually does happen.
More qualified majority voting will have happen, because the likes of Victor Orban will continue to hold the block to ransom on any issue requiring unanimous agreement.
The EU is effectively paralysed over issues like Gaza, which greatly lessens its influence on the international stage.
Creating a ‘Union’ happens on many levels from economic, legal, fiscal and even cultural, much of it without a vote in any Parliament, it has a gravity and momentum all its own
Many of the smaller countries such as Greece, Portugal, Belgium and Ireland are already so absorbed into the EU that it is difficult to see them as able to exist outside of the EU now.
What we used to call ‘dependencies’.
I personally was very much in favour of Brexit and still am, it is my hope that the paths that Britain and the EU are now on are sufficiently divergent as to ensure no return.
As Churchill said ‘we are with Europe, but not of it’.

Humm, the EU launched the Euro with only similar fiscal legislation and a Central Bank.
Dec 13th, 2023 - 01:26 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Perhaps that’s why it struggled.
It is possible to have a single currency without full political union, but even then it involves a very significant loss of sovereignty.
It all comes down to whether you are happy to let other people, not necessarily with your best interest at heart, make crucial decisions for you.
