Brazil ups penalties for femicide

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Thursday signed into law a new bill raising prison terms for femicide to up to 40 years, Agencia Brasil reported, which makes it the highest penalty provided for in the Penal Code, Agencia Brasil reported.

Argentine inflation stands at 3.5% in September

Argentina's National Institute of Statistics and Census (Indec) announced Thursday that September's Consumer Price Index (CPI)stood at 3.5% for a yoy total of 209%. So far in 2024, inflation reached 101.6%, with housing, utilities, and fuels accounting for the largest increases. Thursday's figures represented a slowdown from August's 4.2%. The Core CPI, which records inflation excluding seasonal and regulated prices, stood at 3.3%.

Brazilian Air Force completes third Operation Cedar Roots flight

Brazil's Air Force (FAB) Thursday completed its third airlift mission bringing back nationals of the South American country out of war-torn Lebanon. The third flight landed at the Guarulhos Air Base in Sao Paulo carrying 217 passengers for a total of 672 evacuees, Agencia Brasil reported. The FAB expects to bring back around 3,000 of the 21,000 Brazilians living in Lebanon at a pace of approximately 500 passengers each week.

US State Dept. bans former Ecuadorean leaders from entering the country

The US State Department announced Wednesday it was designating former Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa (2007-2017) as ineligible to enter the country. The measure also applied to former Vice President Jorge Glas (2013-2018) due to their involvement in cases of significant corruption while in public office. Both leaders reportedly “abused” their position by accepting bribes, including through political contributions, in exchange for awarding public works contracts.

Brazilian nun chosen for UNHCR award

Sister Rosita Milesi, a Brazilian nun, lawyer, social worker, and movement builder who has championed the rights and dignity of displaced people for nearly 40 years, has been granted the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award, the United Nations announced in Geneva Wednesday. Besides Milesi, four other women were named regional winners.
