Wages in Uruguay grow 6.95% year-on-year, although real wages fall in September

According to a report from Uruguay National Statistics Institute (INE) released Thursday in Montevideo, wages grew 6.95% in the last twelve months. The Average Wage Index (AWI) had a monthly variation of 0.07% in September for a 6.13% accumulated so far in 2024. In terms of categories, the private sector grew the most, with 7.20%, while the public sector showed an increase of 6.50%.

Bukele's El Salvador to send troops to Haiti

El Salvador's Congress gave its nod this week to the sending of troops to help violence-torn Haiti where crime gangs reign supreme. At first, El Salvador's assistance will be focused on medevac operations in coordination with the United Nations (UN) blue helmets deployed in the Caribbean country. The Parliamentarian decision thus ratified with 57 votes out of 60 the so-called ”Agreement on the Condition of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMAS) in Haiti” signed by the diplomatic missions of El Salvador and Haiti to the Organization of American States (OAS).

Brazil: Unemployment down in 3Q

According to a report from Brazil’s Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released Thursday, unemployment in South America's largest country fell to 6.4 % in the third quarter of 2024 (from July to September), Agencia Brasil reported. These figures are 0.5 percentage points lower than between April and June, when it stood at 6.9%. Compared to July–September 2023, the drop is 1.3 percentage points. In that quarter, the rate was 7.7%.

Oldest tadpole in the world discovered in Argentine Patagonia

Argentine researchers found by chance what resulted to be the oldest tadpole fossil in the world. According to an article published this week, the fossil was found in the province of Santa Cruz and is believed to have lived in the Middle Jurassic period between 161 and 168 million years ago. This unique specimen is said to shed light on the evolution of frogs and toads. It was found in January 2020, while searching for dinosaur remains.

Falklands 2024/25 Shearing circuit took off at Goose Green

The Falkland Islands 2024/25 Shearing circuit kicked off at Goose Green on Saturday October 19. The Open Shearing saw Adam Dickson take a well-deserved win, ahead of Jon Roberts in second place. Evan Jones finished third and Igan Kennedy was fourth. In the Wool Handling class Talia Jones beat Pilar Castro to the top spot. Leila Gilding came third with Holly Turner fourth.

US gives nod to sale of F-16 equipment to Argentina

The US State Department Wednesday gave its nod to the possible sale of high-tech equipment for Argentina's F-16 combat aircraft. The US$ 941 million operation has the Fort Worth (Texas) based company Lockheed Martin as the primary contractor. “This agreement reinforces US foreign policy and security objectives by supporting the security of an important ally in South America,” the State Department said in a statement.
