Brazil's municipal elections: Rio Mayor reelected Sunday; others will have to wait for runoff

Eduardo Paes has been reelected for a fourth time as mayor of Rio de Janeiro in what was regarded as a major electoral blow from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro. With 93.66% of the votes counted, the 54-year-old Paes had collected 60.26% support. The Social Democratic Party (PSD) candidate was mayor of Rio during back-to-back terms (2009-2017) and returned in 2020. Paes dedicated his victory to President Lula and Rio de Janeiro State Governor Cláudio Castro. “As of today, conflicts are over,” he said.

Bolivia unloads fuel in Arica where classes are suspended after hydrocarbons smelled in water

The Chilean port of Arica saw 236,000 barrels of fuel unloaded for Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) while the city prepares for two days with no on-site classes as the local drinking water has been deemed unfit for human consumption given its hydrocarbon odor.

Survey finds Orsi ahead in voting intention to become Uruguay's next president

According to a Usina de Percepción Ciudadana survey released this week in Montevideo, opposition candidate Yamandú Orsi of the Broad Front (Frente Amplio - FA) would defeat Álvaro Delgado of the ruling Multicolor coalition by 6 percentage points. In case of a runoff, Orsi is expected to garner 50% of the vote, the study found between September 27 and 30 from a sample of 500 people.

Paraguay adopting Summer time, probably for good

Pursuant to Decree 1264 dated Feb. 24, 2014, Paraguay is to return to Time Zone GMT-3 on the first Sunday of October each year. But this time around the change might become permanent, as President Santiago Peña said Friday he had no problem signing into law the newly passed bill by Congress for the so-called daylight saving time to become effective. “We do not find any reason not to do so,” the head of state pointed out.

China-funded port in Peru poses threat to Chilean foreign trade operations

A China-sponsored mega-port north of Lima is expected to revolutionize trade between Asia and South America. It would also jeopardize the future of seashore facilities in northern Chile which might lose some of their traffic share once the Chancay Megaport is opened. Works are 93% completed and are due to be finished in November.
