A member of the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly, Cheryl Roberts, met on Tuesday in Westminster with the leader of the UK opposition and of the Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, as part of a round of political engagements in the United Kingdom.

During the meeting, also attended by the Falkland Islands Government Representative to the UK and Europe, Richard Hyslop, the two discussed Islanders' right to self-determination and the relationship between the archipelago and the United Kingdom, according to the Falkland Islands Government London Office.

“I was delighted to meet the Leader of the Opposition and the Leader of the Conservative Party in Westminster,” Roberts said. She described the talks as “constructive and productive” in highlighting shared areas of interest and deepening the relationship between the Falklands and the United Kingdom, and said continued engagement with UK political parties remains a key objective for the territory's government and assembly. She added that she sought to ensure the islands' voices and interests are understood “at the heart of UK decision-making.”

The meeting with Badenoch capped several weeks of activity by Roberts in the United Kingdom. During that period she held meetings with the Minister for the Overseas Territories, Stephen Doughty; the Speaker of the House of Commons, Lindsay Hoyle; the Sports Minister, Stephanie Peacock; the Shadow Minister for the Falklands, Wendy Morton; and other British officials and parliamentarians, as well as senior civil servants.

Unlike the British system, the Falklands Legislative Assembly has no political parties or formal opposition: its eight members are elected as independents. The reference to the “opposition” in this case therefore relates to the political landscape of the United Kingdom, with which the islands' government maintains dialogue across the different parties.

Roberts was elected as a lawmaker for the Stanley constituency in December 2025, in her first term, and holds the Trade, Industry and Mineral Resources portfolio, as well as serving as deputy for Public Infrastructure. A co-founder of a local fishing company, her election was part of an almost complete renewal of the assembly, as MercoPress reported at the time.

Engagement with the main British political forces is a routine practice for Falklands representatives, who seek to preserve cross-party support for the principle of self-determination. The United Kingdom administers the South Atlantic archipelago, whose sovereignty is claimed by Argentina. In a referendum held in 2013, a large majority of Islanders voted to retain their status as a British overseas territory. London maintains that any change to the archipelago's situation must have the consent of its inhabitants, a position Buenos Aires rejects on the grounds that the dispute is bilateral in nature.
