  Southern Ocean around Antarctica in deep trouble, 200 scientists report from 19 countries

  

  By Andrew Constable and Jess Melbourne-Thomas (*) - While the Southern Ocean around Antarctica has been warming for decades, the annual extent of winter sea ice seemed relatively stable – compared to the Arctic. In some areas Antarctic sea ice was even increasing. That was until 2016, when everything changed. The annual extent of winter sea ice stopped increasing. Now we have had two years of record lows.

  Chile planning a fiber link directly with Antarctica

  

  Chile is planning an undersea fiber cable linking the country with Antarctica and several bases in the southernmost continent. With this purpose, Chile signed an agreement with Latin America's Development Bank, CAF to begin feasibility studies

  Rutley in Chile to celebrate 200 years of bilateral relations and to sign an Antarctica cooperation protection Letter of Intent

  

  The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office’s Minister for the Americas and the Caribbean, David Rutley MP, arrives in Chile, from Peru, to strengthen collaboration between the UK and Chile, as both nations celebrate 200 years of bilateral relations.

  Avian Influenza confirmed in Bird Island; South Georgia introduces stringent bio-security measures

  

  Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in brown skua populations on Bird Island, South Georgia. In response to the situation on Monday, the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) has introduced a comprehensive Management Plan and new regulations to further protect terrestrial habitats and the remarkable animals and plants found in those islands.

  Four Antarctic ships have been reported to be docking in the Uruguayan port of Montevideo as the 2023/2024 cruise season is already underway.

  ARA Patagonia back on duty

  

  Argentina's Navy announced this week that the French-built logistics vessel ARA Patagonia was back at sea after a total refit, major repairs, and the replacement of numerous elements and parts at the No. 1 careening dock of the Arsenal Naval Puerto Belgrano and under the management of the Tandanor shipyards.

  BAS begins its ambitious 2023/24 Antarctic field season: 60 projects and 600 people

  

  The British Antarctic Survey has announced that the 2023/24 Antarctic field season has started, with over 600 people beginning the journey South to work on over 60 projects on station and in the field. The season of work speaks clearly to the new 10-year science strategy, Polar Science for a Sustainable Planet, making the most of our operational capabilities across BAS five Antarctic stations, aircraft, and research ship.

  Brazilian Navy begins Operation Antarctica 2023

  

  The Brazilian Navy (MB) officially started its Operation Antarctica (OPERANTAR) 2023 last Sunday with the departure of the Oceanographic Support Vessel “Ary Rongel” and the Polar Vessel “Almirante Maximiano”, it was reported. The units will support the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR) before returning to the Ilha das Cobras naval base in Rio de Janeiro in April 2024, it was also explained.
