  BAS has launched its Antarctic field season with an ambitious range of projects

  

  The British Antarctic Survey, BAS, Antarctic field season has begun, with a challenging and ambitious range of projects to be delivered at five BAS research stations and across the wider continent. Over 500 people are working in Antarctica this season on BAS research stations, on RRS Sir David Attenborough, in the field and in collaboration with other Antarctic operators.

  Argentine Patagonia experts determine cause of death of whales found on shores

  

  Experts have determined that the cause of the recent death of 30 whales in the Valdés Peninsula, in the Argentine province of Chubut, was a harmful algal bloom also referred to as “red tide.” The findings of the dead mammals took place between late September and early October.

  Researchers from Australia's University of Tasmania have reportedly found the oldest marine DNA in history in the Scotia Sea in Antarctica, according to an article carried by the journal Nature Communications. The study also involved scientists from the University of Bonn.

  Argentine ministers convene in Antarctica

  

  Argentine Ministers Daniel Filmus (Science), Carla Vizzotti (Health), and Jorge Taiana (Defense) convened at Antarctica's Marambio Base to announce the construction of three new laboratories and other undertakings in the area.
