  Mapuches strike again in southern Chile

  

  With just about two weeks to go before the highly-polarized presidential elections between radical candidates from the left and the right, a group claiming to be fighting for the rights of the Mapuche indigenous peoples Friday committed yet another arson attack in the Biobio region in southern Chile. The fire affected a house and two sheds, it was reported.

  Chile's Lower House votes against legalizing abortion

  

  Chile's Lower House Tuesday turned down a bill to decriminalize abortion up to the 14th week of pregnancy by 65 votes against, 62 in favor and one abstention. Thus the initiative will be shelved.

  Latin American left wing leaders expecting progressive victories in Chile and Brazil

  

  The Puebla Group, a gathering of left-wing leaders from Latin America and Spain held a meeting in Mexico on Tuesday to celebrate the victory of Xiomara Castro in the Honduran presidential election and looked forward to similar triumphs by Chilean candidate Gabriel Boric in December and hopefully Lula da Silva next year in Brazil.

  Chile: Piñera appoints new Health Undersecretary

  

  Chile's President Sebastián Piñera Monday appointed surgeon María Teresa Valenzuela to take over from pediatrician Paula Daza as Health Undersecretary. Daza turned in her resignation Sunday after announcing she was joining far-right candidate José Antonio Kast in his quest against leftist Gabriel Boric at the Dec. 19 presidential runoff.

  Pinochet's political heir not likely to win presidential runoff in Chile

  

  Chilean far-left presidential hopeful Gabriel Boric from the coalition between the Broad Front and the Communist Party would easily beat his far-right opponent José Antonio Kast in the Dec. 19 presidential runoff by 53.9% of the votes against 31.2%, according to a Pulso Ciudadano survey released Sunday.
