  Change in fisheries policy for Falkland Islands

  The Falkland Islands Government has amended their fisheries policy in a bid to make the industry more stable and sustainable. The biggest change in the new policy is that it is now a rights based policy rather than a licence allocation only policy.

  Record squid catch for the San Matías Gulf.

  Squid catches in the San Matías Gulf reached a record 5,535 tonnes, reports Río Negro Fisheries director, Italo Sangiulliano. This is a promising result for the local sector although it is nowhere near the 200,000 to 3000,000 tonne annual production of the two fisheries management units.

  Britain reported last week to the UN Fourth Committee on Decolonisation that it would continue its policy of informal co-operation with the C24. The focus was on Caribbean territories and the UK delegate declared that independence would be encouraged if desired by territories “that have that option.”

  Argentine Ambassador Federico Mirre takes up his new position as Argentine Ambassador in London next week. Mirre is a lawyer and a career diplomat. Previous foreign posts include The Vatican, Germany, France, Ivory Coast and Norway the last two where he served as Ambassador. He was born in Argentina in 1939, is married and has two daughters. He is currently director of the Western Europe Desk at the Argentine Foreign Affairs Ministry in Buenos Aires.
