    Falklands closer to having a National Park at Hill Cove Mountains

    A total of 67% of respondents agreed with the concept of designating a national park in the Falklands, and 54% agreed with the proposed location for the park

    The Falkland Islands is closer to having a national park in the Hill Cove Mountains to the north of West Falkland. This is the result of a public consultation held by the Falkland Islands Government Environment Department from February to April 2024 on the proposed designation of such a national park.

    Falklands travelers to benefit with seats for the Ascension/St Helena Airlink

    The Falkland Islands Government has informed that an agreement has been signed with Ascension Island Government to guarantee travelers from the Falkland Islands ten seats on each flight connecting Ascension and St Helena – known as the St Helena Airlink. This agreement removes the risk of travelers from the Falklands not being able to book a seat by guaranteeing availability.

    Falklands, instructions for pensioners receiving payments from overseas

    Due to unforeseen circumstances, the overseas payment system, Straight to Bank, is experiencing an issue. The Falkland Islands Government are working with Standard Chartered to urgently investigate this issue and an update will be provided as soon as we have more information.

    With the upcoming cruise ship season approaching, the Falkland Islands Government Environment Department has been working in partnership with Falkland Islands Tourist Board to create and implement a set of guidelines for operators and tourists visiting the Gypsy Cove and Yorke Bay penguin colonies on cruise ship days.

    Sunshine at Mount Pleasant Airport in July way above average

    July was slightly windier than usual, it was reported

    July of 2024 saw the Mount Pleasant Airfield record a total of 90.3 hours of sunshine against an average of 70.1 hours, Falklands Radio reported citing Met Office data. The broadcaster also mentioned that lying snow was present for 18 days, partially due to the heavy snowfall at the end of June, despite temperatures being around average.

    Falklands cancels second season of Loligo squid for conservation reasons

    Despite the fishing industry agreeing with reasons not to open the second Loligo season, this will have a significant impact on the fishing sector

    In July 2024 the Falkland Islands Fisheries Department conducted a routine pre-season survey prior to the second Loligo season, working in close partnership with local fishing companies. The survey results showed the lowest second pre-season biomass estimate since 2008, with the lower end of the estimate being below the Fisheries Department safe stock replenishment threshold of 10,000 tonnes.
