The market for squid is collapsing because of over supply and free fall prices, according to one of Argentina's main squid operators, Guillermo De los Santos, reports the Mar del Plata press.

Norway seeking trawlers to licence for Antarctic krill

Norway will be issuing permits for krill trawling in the Antarctica to four vessels by end of May. One of the vessels that has presented an application, the Saga Sea, is operated by Aker Biomarine Antarctic AS, and is already fishing with a temporary permit. It is expected that this vessel will receive a new and more permanent authorisation, but with regards to 10 other applications submitted it is not as certain which will receive the permits. It is even more uncertain whether there are any vessels available for chartering, or for satisfying the need for cold storage and processing facilities.

Argentina distributes 2007 toothfish quotas totaling 2.500 tons

Argentina's Under Secretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture announced toothfish quotas for the 2007 season of 1.750 tons, according to Resolution 132/2007, according to La Prensa de Santa Cruz.

Faeroe Islands' trawler on fire off south Chile

One crew member dead and eight disappeared is the primary balance of a fire which broke out Friday night in the Faeroe Islands flagged factory vessel BF Hercules, operating 280 nautical miles south east of Ancud, (next to Puerto Montt) reported Saturday morning a release from the Chilean Navy.

Decisive stage of South Pacific Regional Fisheries Organisation

Representatives from 22 countries will meet in Chile's coastal town of Reñaca, Region V, at the end of this month to discuss creation of a regulatory body to monitor fishing in the South Pacific.
