    UK government to publish details of the fishing industry after Brexit

    There were protests when it was revealed that the UK would continue to be bound by the Common Fisheries Policy during the post-Brexit transition period. JAMES GLOSSOP

    The UK government is to publish details of how it wants to manage the fishing industry after Brexit. Ministers promised the UK would “take back control of our waters” when it leaves the EU's Common Fisheries Policy.

    Japan wants to change voting rules at IWC to hunt for more whale species

    Australia's Department of the Environment and Energy said it would seek to block any attempt by Japan to resume commercial whaling.

    Australia and other anti-whaling nations are seeking a showdown with Japan as Tokyo attempts to resume commercial whaling later this year. Japanese officials have reportedly confirmed the country's attempt to alter voting rules and allow hunting of whale species with “healthy” numbers at an International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting in Brazil in September.

    Shrimp landings in Argentine reach 68.000 tons

    According to the release of official records, until 21 June, 68,081 tons of shrimp had been unloaded, compared to 87,400 in the same period last year

    Shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) landings in Argentina accumulated during the first half of this year are somewhat lower than those for the same period last year. According to the preliminary figures, up to 21 June, released by the Argentine Under-Secretariat of Fisheries, 68,081 tons had been unloaded, compared to about 87,400 tons landed between January and June 2017, which was a record year.

    Falklands fishing companies launch new website and promotional video

    The idea of the event was to further raise the profile of the Falklands fisheries both domestically and internationally effectively re-branding FIFCAS

    The Falkland Islands Fishing Companies Association, (FIFCA) hosted a reception at the Historic Dockyard Museum in Stanley on Thursday the 31st May to launch their new website and promotional video. In attendance were invited guests that included HE the Governor Mr Nigel Phillips CBE along with Members of the Legislative Assembly, representatives of the Falkland Islands Government Fisheries Department, FIFCA members as well as the local media and press outlets.

    Falklands government to focus on family-friendly legislation in 2018/19

    In setting its legislative priorities for the next twelve months, the Falkland Islands Government has signalled an intention to focus on legislation of interest to families. The Islands are internally self-governing, with much law created locally or adapted from elsewhere in the world. The program for the next year was published this week alongside their fiscal budget for the year.

    Falklands confirms exchange of fisheries data with Argentina will resume “in short order”

    Speaking to the Fisheries Committee, Mr. Barton responded to concerns expressed by members and reassured them that the exchange of data would be mutual.

    The Falkland Islands Director of Natural Resources John Barton confirmed this week that exchange of fisheries data will resume “in short order” following the resumption of fisheries talks with Argentina last month. Mr. Barton confirmed that proposals for joint research cruises are being drawn up and another meeting has been scheduled to take place in London in late 2018.

    Tierra del Fuego insists with a representative in the SW Atlantic Fisheries sub committee

    Tierra del Fuego governor Rosana Bertone is demanding to be an active part of the Malvinas state policy and briefed on any initiatives on the subject.

    Tierra del Fuego media and Clarin in Buenos Aires coincide that foreign minister Jorge Faurie has admitted the possibility for a representative from the extreme south province to attend the Argentine/UK South West Atlantic Fisheries Scientific Sub Committee meetings, which were recently re-launched at the Argentine capital.

    Falklands' Loligo first season squid catch, the best in the last five years

    Rounded to the nearest 100 tons, the first season catch in 2013 was 19,900. In 2014 it was 28,100, and in 2015, 19,400: in 2016, 22,600, while in 2017 it reached 39,400.

    The Falkland Islands' total catch of the loligo squid, or Falklands' calamari, in the first season of 2018 was 43,085 tons, which compares very favorably to first-season catches over the last five years.

    Japanese whale hunt slaughters 122 pregnant minke whales

    The latest figures show that of 333 minke Antarctic whales killed last summer, 181 were females. Some 122 females, or 67%, were pregnant.

    More than 120 pregnant whales were slaughtered in the latest Japanese whale hunt in Antarctica's Southern Ocean, new documents show, reigniting calls to step up efforts to stop the annual killing spree. A further 114 immature whales were killed as part of the so-called “scientific” whaling program, according to meeting papers from the International Whaling Commission's scientific committee meeting this month.
