    Spanish sea produce canning sector exports Euros 406 million in five months; 11% squid

    Canned tuna remains the main product marketed worldwide by the sector of canned and prepared products of the Spanish industry

    Exports of canned, semi-preserved and prepared fish and shellfish experienced an increase of 3.85% in volume and 7.41% in value during the first five months of this year compared to the same period of the previous year. Between January and May, Spain exported 86,732 tons valued at more than Euros 406 million, according to the canning association ANFACO-CECOPESCA.

    Europe melting: river water suffocates fish and is too hot to cool nuclear power stations

    Several of Germany’s nuclear power stations are reducing energy output because rivers used to cool the power plants are too warm.

    The heat wave gripping large stretches of Europe has already been blamed for deadly forest fires and crop failures. Now, freshwater fish could be its next victims. Some regions in Germany sweltered as the mercury hit 39C, and the German Meteorological Office said the country’s all-time record of 40.3C could be topped this week.

    Argentina and Spain sign fisheries MoU to promote conservation and management of straddling species

    The MoU was stamped in Buenos Aires at the recent G20 Agriculture ministerial meeting by Argentina's Luis Miguel Etchevehere and Spain's Luis Planas.

    Argentina and Spain have signed a fisheries and aquaculture bilateral cooperation Memorandum of Understanding. The MoU was stamped in Buenos Aires during the recent G20 Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries ministerial meeting by Argentina's Luis Miguel Etchevehere and Spain's Luis Planas.

    Latam agriculture and fisheries production to expand 17% over the next decade

    Japan wants to change voting rules at IWC to hunt for more whale species

    Australia's Department of the Environment and Energy said it would seek to block any attempt by Japan to resume commercial whaling.

    Australia and other anti-whaling nations are seeking a showdown with Japan as Tokyo attempts to resume commercial whaling later this year. Japanese officials have reportedly confirmed the country's attempt to alter voting rules and allow hunting of whale species with “healthy” numbers at an International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting in Brazil in September.

    Shrimp landings in Argentine reach 68.000 tons

    According to the release of official records, until 21 June, 68,081 tons of shrimp had been unloaded, compared to 87,400 in the same period last year

    Shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) landings in Argentina accumulated during the first half of this year are somewhat lower than those for the same period last year. According to the preliminary figures, up to 21 June, released by the Argentine Under-Secretariat of Fisheries, 68,081 tons had been unloaded, compared to about 87,400 tons landed between January and June 2017, which was a record year.

    Falklands fishing companies launch new website and promotional video

    The idea of the event was to further raise the profile of the Falklands fisheries both domestically and internationally effectively re-branding FIFCAS

    The Falkland Islands Fishing Companies Association, (FIFCA) hosted a reception at the Historic Dockyard Museum in Stanley on Thursday the 31st May to launch their new website and promotional video. In attendance were invited guests that included HE the Governor Mr Nigel Phillips CBE along with Members of the Legislative Assembly, representatives of the Falkland Islands Government Fisheries Department, FIFCA members as well as the local media and press outlets.
