    Arthroplasty overseas service for Falklands patients with hips/knees problems

    Spire Healthcare has been chosen by the Falkland Islands Government as the UK private provider for Arthroplasty (hips and knees). It was noted at the Health and Medical Services Committee by Director of Health and Social Services Tom Bale in his report that a paper was recently approved by ExCo, for the approach and funding, of outsourced Arthroplasty for qualifying persons, who suffer chronically, with hip and/or knee issues.

    Sanitary authorities in the United Kingdom (UK) launched a warning over the new coronavirus version known as EG.5.1 gaining ground, although Arcturus XBB.1.16 remains the most dominant variant, it was reported. The new sublineage is also responsible for 17% of cases in the United States.

    Greenpeace “No New Oil” activists, take their protest to PM Sunak's country estate

    Four individuals scaled Sunak's large house in North Yorkshire and dropped long black sheets to cover the facade and holding up a banner that read “No New Oil.”

    Greenpeace activists carried out a protest on the roof of the country estate belonging to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday. Sunak was not at home at the time as he is on holiday with his family in California.

    Falklands suffering spread of respiratory and gastrointestinal virus; prevention measures

    The Chief Medical Officer has recommended that within KEMH, staff and visitors will be asked to wear a face covering/mask. For those who arrive at the hospital without one, one will be provided.

    The Falkland Islands hospital KEMH have seen a low number of COVID-19 cases in the community, in addition to COVID-19 we have other respiratory and gastrointestinal viruses that are causing problems as well. The KEMH will be reverting back to some of their previous COVID–19 measures in an attempt to slow the spread through their team to ensure they can continue to provide their services.

    Argentina's National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (Conicet) has identified in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) and in the country's northwestern provinces genetic mutations in the Aedes aegypti mosquito (carrier of the dengue virus) that turned them resistant to normally lethal doses of pesticides, the national news agency Telam reported amid a dengue outbreak, which has resulted in 129,150 cases and 65 deaths over the past 12 months.

    Palliative care now mandatory for healthcare providers in Uruguay

    Uruguay's Senate passed a bill unanimously Tuesday providing for universal access to palliative care. All 26 senators present voted in favor of the Uruguayan Society of Palliative Medicine and Care's (SUMCP) initiative dating back to 2020, it was reported in Montevideo. Forty-one percent of the population is still not guaranteed access to palliative care.
