“Polar Preet” named Woman of the Year for becoming the first woman to reach the South Pole solo

British Army Officer Captain Preet Chandi – known as Polar Preet – has been named Woman of the Year at an annual awards ceremony. Capt Chandi wasn't present to collect her honor – or the Inspirational Award she also won – as she is currently on her latest challenge in the Antarctic in which she hopes to become the first woman to cross the frozen continent solo and unsupported.

Indonesia earthquake toll reaches 310 dead

Search and rescue teams in Indonesia have so far retrieved 310 bodies after Tuesday's 5.6-degree tremor that hit the Cianjur region in the country’s West Java province, it was reported Friday. The whereabouts of at least 24 people are still unknown and over 36,000 residents have been displaced, the authorities also said.
