    Former Paraguayan President Lugo not returning to politics

    Lugo is well but does not plan to return to the political arena

    Former Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo said Thursday in a radio interview on the occasion of his 73rd birthday that he was feeling well after a brain stroke in 2022 that had him spend over 6 months recuperating in Buenos Aires. However, he admitted he was somewhat tired and unfit to return to the political arena. He was a Senator on behalf of the leftwing Frente Guasu when he suffered his health issue.

    The Uruguayan Government issued a decree Wednesday expediting the admission of some 3,500 Venezuelan refugees into the country, Foreign Minister Omar Paganini announced in a press conference in Montevideo.

    Colombia's Lower House Tuesday passed a bill outlawing bullfighting after four debates and 14 failed attempts, Congressman Alejandro García, promoter of the initiative, announced. “Colleagues, this victory is yours. Today I can say that the House of Representatives fulfilled Colombia by banning bullfighting,” he announced. “We knew it wouldn't be easy, but we never imagined it would be this difficult. This bill has fallen 14 times,” he also said. The ban will come into force in 2027.

    Falklands: Consultation work to be undertaken on salmon farming

    The Falkland Islands Government has agreed to dispose of the claim brought by Unity Marine Limited by mutual consent, and on 27 May 2024, the Chief Justice issued the Order as agreed by the parties. The claim sought to challenge the decision made in March 2022 that arrangements should be put in place to prevent large-scale salmon-farming from proceeding in the Falkland Islands. Amongst other things, the Government had previously given an expectation that there would be a full public consultation on the issue prior to a decision being made. The Government accept that a full public consultation should be held, before a further decision is made on the issue.
