Argentina: Independence Day military parade called off

The Argentine Government of President Javier Milei has canceled the traditional July 9 Independence Day military parade to save public funds, the Defense Ministry announced Friday. The move came as a surprise, given that the Milei administration had reinstated and heavily promoted the parade last year after it was discontinued during the Alberto Fernández and Kirchner administrations.

Relief operation of DRC Uruguayan blue helmets underway

Uruguay is carrying out on Friday a troop relief operation for its United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Approximately 200 Uruguayan soldiers from the Uruguay IV Battalion are arriving at Carrasco International Airport at 6.35 am on an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Rwanda. President Yamandú Orsi and Defense Minister Sandra Lazo will welcome them.

Lula and Peña discuss espionage case

Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil and Santiago Peña of Paraguay on Thursday discussed during the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) Summit in Buenos Aires the ongoing investigation into an intelligence operation carried out during the Jair Bolsonaro years to obtain confidential information from Paraguayan officials involved in negotiations on the binational Itaipu power plant. Woman shot at Brazilian consulate in Ciudad del Este

Brazilian national Cássio Mussawer Montenegro opened fire Thursday at approximately 1.30 pm against Prima Felicia Benítez de Cantuni, a 78-year-old former judge who works as a legal advisor at the Brazilian Consulate in Ciudad del Este. During the attack at the diplomatic mission, the woman was shot in the left arm. Security personnel fired back. The perpetrator then tried to kill himself but failed. They are both hospitalized, the Alto Paraná Police Chief, Crio Feliciano Martínez, confirmed.

Lula visits CFK at her Buenos Aires apartment
