Mercosur Summit: Milei pledges to go through together or solo

Argentine President Javier Milei urged the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) on Thursday to abandon its “destructive inertia,” as he hosted the bloc's Summit in Buenos Aires. He also underscored his government's commitment to “the path of freedom,” warning that “we will embark on” it, “either accompanied or alone.”

Brazil's water authority finds 241 dams under safety risks

According to a dam safety report released this week by Brazil's water and sanitation authority, ANA, about the 2024–25 period, 241 of these structures need priority risk management, since their managers have not complied with all the national policy requirements.

Peruvian prosecutors want Keiko Fujimori sentenced to 35 years in jail

Peruvian Lava Jato prosecutor José Domingo Pérez submitted a filing Wednesday requesting a 35-year prison sentence for former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori, in a revised criminal indictment in the so-called “cocktail case,” which investigates the alleged irregular financing of her 2011 and 2016 election campaigns. In a previous proceeding ending up in a mistrial in April this year, a 30-year sentence had been sought.

Mercosur-EFTA FTA announced in Buenos Aires

The Southern Common Market's (Mercosur) Summit in Buenos Aires kicked off Wednesday with the announcement by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) finalized with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA - Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland). The documents are to be signed in the coming months.

Court allows CFK to receive Lula's visit

Buenos Aires Judge Jorge Gorini Wednesday acquiesced to a request from former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner's (CFK) legal team and authorized former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to visit her Thursday at the apartment where she is serving a six-year sentence for corruption under house arrest.
