    Four Cuban footballers have defected after their national team's debut in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States, it was reported this week. “Roberney Caballero, Denilson Morales, Neisser Sandó, and Jassael Herrera left the delegation,” a local TV sportscaster was quoted as saying.

    Petro says false positives were “the worst contemporary crime”

    Petro made these statements while his approval ratings are rapidly decreasing

    Colombian President Gustavo Petro stressed Thursday that the so-called “false positives” were “the worst contemporary crime.” He was referring to the more than 6,400 extrajudicial executions committed by federal troops supposedly fighting rebel guerrillas. Petro made those statements after eight military personnel admitted their participation in some of those executions.

    Peru's one-house Congress passed a bill whereby President Dina Boluarte will be able to leave the country and continue to exercise the presidency remotely, it was reported in Lima Thursday. Boluarte was the only South American leader to miss out on Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's Summit last month.

    Scotland suspends plans to create Protected Marine Areas in 10% of its waters

    Net Zero Secretary Mairi McAllan said the government was firmly committed to enhancing marine protection, “but current plans would not be progressed.”

    Under strong pressure from the fishing industry and some island communities, the Scottish government has scrapped plans to create Highly Protected Marine Areas in 10% of Scotland's seas. The proposals would have restricted fishing and other human activities in some coastal areas, in a bid to protect the environment.

    Argentina's Coast Guard (PNA) will up its patrolling in the Yacyretá dam area following an incident with the Paraguayan Navy which allegedly crossed into its waters, according to a complaint filed by local authorities of the province of Corrientes, it was reported.

    Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said Wednesday it was essential that an agreement between Mercosur and the European Union (EU) “be concluded as soon as possible,” Agencia Brasil reported.
