  Argentina makes official presentation of new continental shelf outer limit

  

  Argentina on Monday made the official presentation of the outer limit of its continental platform, passed by the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, CLCS, on March 11, during a media conference which included officials from the foreign ministry, officers from the Navy and Coast Guard, scientists and lawmakers.

  Blocked access to food in Antarctica kills an estimated 150.000 Adelie penguins

  

  Scientists say an estimated 150,000 Adelie penguins have been wiped out on Antarctica's Cape Denison in the five years since a giant iceberg blocked their main access to food. A study recently published in the journal Antarctic Science says the B09B iceberg crashed with the Mertz Glacier Tongue and got stuck in Commonwealth Bay, an area that was rarely covered by sea-ice, making it ideal for Adelie penguin colonies.

  Luxury cruise line Seaborn is adding a new adventure to its Antarctica voyages aboard 'Seabourn Quest' this season: Kayaking. Ventures by Seabourn optional kayak excursions will also be offered at South Georgia Island and Port Stanley, Falkland Islands. It's an expansion of the line's new “Ventures by Seabourn” excursions that launched last summer in other destinations.

  Penguins can taste only sour and salty food, scientists have discovered. A genetic study suggests the flightless birds lost three of the five basic tastes long ago in evolution. Taste is critical for survival in most animals, but may not matter in the penguin, which swallows fish whole, say researchers in China and the US.

  China is preparing to mark 30 years of polar expeditions, when on 20 February 1985 opened its first permanent research station in Antarctica, The Great Wall on King George Island. Since then China has continued to advance and is now planning the fifth permanent station.
