All flights by Avianca Brasil, the fourth largest airline in the country, were grounded Friday by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) for safety reasons, it was announced.
Chile’s LATAM Airlines, the largest airline in the region, posted a US$ 60 million loss in the first quarter, compared with a US$ 92 million profit in the same period last year, due to a strong U.S. dollar and weak demand from Argentina.
Outgoing President Michel Temer issued an executive order that allows foreign groups to own 100% of a Brazilian airline. Previously, non-Brazilians were limited to 20% of shares. The decision occurs in the midst of a bankruptcy proceeding filed by Avianca Brasil.
