The UK is planning a huge marine protection zone near the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean, in an area that is also claimed by Argentina, a British official said on Wednesday.
British Prime Minister David Cameron reiterated before Parliament his support for the Overseas Territories, including the Falkland Islands, and their right to remain British. Cameron made special mention to the fact that next year in the anniversary of the liberation of the Falklands “which will be a moment for genuine celebration in all Overseas Territories”
The decision to build an airport tin St Helena and confirmation of UK’s commitment to defend its Overseas Territories were among the main conclusions of the latest Consultative Council (OTCC) which concluded this week in London.
HMS Montrose has visited Ascension Island as part of her mission to promote British interests in the South Atlantic over the coming months. Ascension supports the airbridge which provides the vital link between the UK and MPA in the Falkland Islands, seat of British forces in the South Atlantic.
As a decade of British Overseas Territories’ constitutional revision is coming to a close the UK policy strategy is to ensure that constitutional arrangements are effectively working to be best interests of OT and the UK, announced Foreign Secretary William Hague this past week before the House of Commons.
The United Nations Special Committee of 24, (for the implementation of the declaration on the granting of independence to colonial countries and peoples) will hold its annual regional seminar in Kingstown, Jamaica, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, from 31 May to 2 June.
HMS Edinburgh leaves Wednesday for a seven months patrol of the British South Atlantic Islands, including the Falklands and South Georgia. She will be conducting maritime security patrols, policing and protecting Islanders living in the British Overseas Territories.

In November 2010, journalist Peter Preston set out his opinions on the future of the Falkland Islands. He urged Her Majesty’s Government to “Ditch The Falklands” and to start discussing the possibility of shared sovereignty with Argentina.
A wide range of issues of mutual interest and concern were addressed by the UK Minister for the Overseas Territories Henry Bellingham and leaders from the Overseas Territories. The OTs Consultative Council is currently meeting in London.
The Falkland Islands Government intend to take a, “stronger and more productive stance” at next month’s UN meeting in New York of the United Nations ‘Special Committee of 24’ on decolonisation.
