Chilean authorities Wednesday paid tribute to the victims of the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte which started on Sept. 11, 1973, after the military uprising resulted in the death of President Salvador Allende and the overthrowing of the democratically-elected government 51 years ago, when a regime that would last until 1990 seized power.
Just a couple of weeks before the commemoration events of the fiftieth anniversary of the Chilean coup d'état (11 September), retired Generals and Admirals addressed a letter to President Gabriel Boric.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 42nd anniversary of Chile's military coup, President Michelle Bachelet said on Friday that the truth must still be told and justice still needs to be served for the thousands of victims of the country's dictatorship.
